Dubai Makes History: Launches UAE’s First Drone Delivery Route from Nad Al Sheba Grand Mosque

Dubai Makes History: Launches First Drone Delivery Route from a Mosque

Dubai has taken a groundbreaking leap into the future of urban logistics with the launch of its first-ever drone delivery route using a mosque as a smart hub. This pioneering initiative in the Nad Al Sheba neighborhood marks a significant milestone in the emirate’s journey to becoming a global leader in smart city innovation.

How the Drone Delivery Service Works

The service offers a seamless and futuristic experience for residents:

  1. Place an Order: Customers in Nad Al Sheba can order food and beverages through the Keeta Drone delivery platform.

  2. Restaurant Preparation: Partnering restaurants and cafés at the nearby Avenue Mall prepare the orders.

  3. Autonomous Flight: Instead of a delivery driver, a drone autonomously flies the order to its destination.

  4. Smart Hub Pickup: The drone delivers the order to a designated drop-off zone in the courtyard of the Nad Al Sheba Grand Mosque, where customers can collect their items.

This process drastically reduces delivery times and introduces an eco-friendly alternative to traditional road-based methods.

A Mosque as a Smart Hub: Blending Tradition and Innovation

The choice of the Nad Al Sheba Grand Mosque as the delivery hub is a strategic masterstroke. It reimagines the role of community centers in the digital age, transforming a place of worship into a multifunctional “smart hub.” This demonstrates Dubai’s innovative urban planning, leveraging trusted community structures to integrate next-generation services seamlessly into daily life.

A Collaborative Effort for a Smarter Dubai

This successful rollout is the result of a powerful public-private partnership between:

  • The Dubai Civil Aviation Authority (DCAA)

  • The Islamic Affairs and Charitable Activities Department

  • Keeta Drone

This collaboration underscores a shared commitment to making fast, technology-driven, and environmentally friendly delivery solutions a reality in Dubai’s urban landscape.

Dubai’s Ambitious Drone Delivery Roadmap

The Nad Al Sheba route is just the beginning. Dubai’s formal drone delivery journey began in December 2024 when the DCAA awarded the first drone-delivery licence to Keeta Drone for operations within Dubai Silicon Oasis (DSO).

The city has set ambitious, clear targets for expansion. According to Mohammed Abdulla Lengawi, Director-General of the DCAA, the goal is to have drone delivery services cover 30% of Dubai by 2026, scaling up to an impressive 70% coverage within the next five years.

The Advanced Technology Powering the Skies

A key enabler for this rapid scaling is a state-of-the-art drone air-traffic management system. Recently, Dubai Air Navigation Services (DANS) was granted the country’s first drone-airspace service-provider certificate.

This advanced platform is the nerve center for safe and efficient operations, integrating:

  • Radar systems

  • Real-time weather data

  • Automated flight approvals

  • Conflict-detection and avoidance systems

This robust infrastructure is also designed to accommodate future advancements in urban air mobility, such as eVTOLs (electric vertical take-off and landing aircraft).

Tangible Benefits for Residents and the City

The immediate advantage for Dubai residents is clear: faster, more convenient delivery of meals and drinks, bypassing road traffic entirely. The long-term benefits are transformative:

  • Reduced Traffic Congestion: By taking delivery vehicles off the road, drones help alleviate Dubai’s traffic pressures.

  • Environmental Sustainability: Drone deliveries contribute to lower carbon emissions, supporting Dubai’s sustainability goals.

  • Smarter Urban Space: Utilizing community hubs like mosques for logistics creates a more efficient and connected urban fabric.

Conclusion: A Logistics Revolution is Taking Flight

The launch of Nad Al Sheba’s drone delivery route is more than a pilot project; it is a definitive step into the future of urban living. By combining visionary regulation, private-sector innovation, and a community-centric approach, Dubai is not just testing the future of logistics—it is deploying it. This initiative solidifies the emirate’s position at the forefront of the global smart logistics revolution.
