Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar criticize Amazon Prime Video’s new docuseries about their family and religion as ‘sensational’
In a statement on their family website, Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar expressed their dismay at the recently released Shiny and Happy: Secrets of the Duggar FamilyOn Amazon Prime Video.
The couple described the documentary as sad and sensational, claiming it hurt their loved ones.
“This ‘documentary’ portrays so many things in derogatory and sensationalized ways because, sadly, that’s the direction entertainment has taken these days,” the statement read.
They claim their family is normal but have experienced joy and heartbreak in the public eye. Jim Bob and Michelle have recently criticized the direction of the entertainment, suggesting that derogatory and sensational portrayals have become commonplace.
The statement ended with what appeared to be a subtle jab at their daughter, Jill Duggar, and her husband, Derick Dillard, suggesting that a private setting is more conducive to repairing the relationship.
Despite their differences, the couple reiterated their love for every member of the family and their commitment to a good relationship. The series delves into the controversial aspects of the Duggar family’s reign in the spotlight, including the scandal surrounding their eldest son Josh’s alleged molestation of his sister and other young girls.
It also features accounts from former friends and family members that shed light on the cover-up of sexual harassment scandals and the extremist nature of their religious beliefs.
References were made to Josh Dugal’s subsequent conviction for child pornography, as well as Jill Dugal’s involvement in the documentary series and her interviews about her strict upbringing.
The series also explores the traumatic experiences of former members of the Institute of Basic Living Principles (IBLP), the nondenominational Christian organization in which Duggars grew up.
