The Environment Authority of Abu Dhabi (EAD) has started issuing licenses to livestock owners and breeders to regulate grazing and all related activities in Abu Dhabi. This is part of an effort to protect natural rangelands and promote sustainable traditional grazing practices.
The permitting policy was introduced to ensure the restoration of vegetation cover and promote the sustainability of biodiversity. It also provides the opportunity for natural regeneration of the pasture and ensures its continuity for future generations.
The issuance of the license is carried out in accordance with the implementing regulations of Law No. (11) of 2020 on the Regulation of Grazing in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, which was recently passed by the EAD under Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Na Issued by order of His Highness Hayan, the Ruler’s representative in the Al Dhafra area and Chairman of the Board of Directors of EAD, the governing body for environmental affairs in Abu Dhabi.
The agency, which implements the law, aims to regulate grazing, protect natural rangelands, and promote sustainable traditional practices in coordination with relevant authorities to promote management practices in protected areas that balance important natural habitats while protecting plants from damage. overgrazing.
To obtain a grazing license, applicants must be at least 21 years old, a citizen of the United Arab Emirates and hold a valid animal log wealth certificate approved by the Abu Dhabi Agriculture and Food Safety Authority (ADAFSA).
Livestock owners and breeders may apply to the EAD for a permit in accordance with the procedures and requirements specified by the agency and after paying the specified fee. They must also attach a copy of the applicant’s ID card, and a copy of a valid approved Animal Log Proof of Wealth proving that the applicant owns livestock and has been registered by the relevant authority in the Animal Identification and Registration System. Permit applicants must identify the person accompanying and caring for the livestock and provide a copy of their Emirates ID.
Licensees will be allowed to graze livestock in open wild areas. Stay at least 2 kilometers away from protected areas, forests, residential, military, oil and private areas, and all restricted access roads and places. Unaccompanied grazing of livestock is prohibited and permits are only valid for one grazing season.
Licensees must abide by a number of environmental conditions, which include not introducing exotic plants, animals or any harmful substances into the grazing area. Plants or any parts thereof shall not be uprooted, burned, transported, felled, destroyed, felled, removed or collected in grazing areas, and shall not destroy or endanger biodiversity or cause any damage to the local environment of grazing areas.
They must also observe the allowed grazing seasons. The licensee must also take into account moratorium periods established by the EAD in coordination with the relevant authorities to ensure the sustainability of the grazing area. The use of bicycles, cars and any type of vehicles and machinery that affect vegetation cover is prohibited in grazing areas, and the transfer of grazing permits to others is prohibited.
Applications for grazing permits can be made through the Knowledge Center section of the Abu Dhabi Environment Authority website www.ead.gov.ae. Applicants should select the Resources page and download the Grazing Permit Application. Once the application is complete, please attach the required documents and email to: Customerhappiness@ead.gov.ae.
Once the application is complete, a link will be sent to the applicant requesting a payment of AED 250, upon receipt, an electronic copy of the grazing permit will be issued and emailed to the applicant.
The agency appreciated the contribution of livestock owners and their cooperation in the implementation of the grazing law and its enforcement regulations, as they supported the Government of Abu Dhabi (represented by EAD) as the competent authority. The law strengthens the agency’s role in monitoring rangeland resources and revegetating grazing areas to promote grazing as a traditional heritage practice, documented and protected according to scientific standards.
Implementation of the decision also helps to ensure the conservation of natural and cultural heritage through sustainable use of resources, conservation of native wild desert flora and reduction of soil degradation, thereby supporting long-term food security. It also helps ensure that sustainable traditional grazing and humanity’s unique relationship with the desert and its natural resources are preserved and protected for future generations.
