July 7 (Renewables) – A joint venture between renewable energy developer Masdar and French utility EDF (EPA:EDF) will install an 8.2 MW solar power plant on the roof of the SeaWorld theme park in Abu Dhabi Photovoltaic (PV) factory, the theme park is currently under construction on one of the most popular islands in the UAE.
Emerge, founded by two energy giants with solar projects in the UAE and Saudi Arabia, has been contracted to design, build, operate and maintain rooftop solar systems at the marine life mega-development on Yas Island.
The solar developer will implement the project on behalf of Miral Abu Dhabi, which is developing the theme park.
“This project demonstrates Abu Dhabi’s commitment to finding innovative ways to achieve its clean energy goals and increase the use of renewable energy,” said Masdar Chief Executive Mohammad Jameel Al-Ramahi.
According to the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), rooftop solar could provide around 6% of the UAE’s total electricity generation by 2030.
Once completed in 2022, SeaWorld Abu Dhabi will be home to the world’s largest marine life aquarium, home to more than 68,000 marine animals including sharks, schools of fish, manta rays and turtles. Adjacent to the aquarium and theme park, a research and rescue centre is under construction that will serve as an advanced knowledge centre for indigenous bay and marine life ecosystems.
