Emirates Global Aluminum, the world’s largest producer of “premium aluminium” and the UAE’s largest industrial company outside of oil and gas, has joined the HILT CRC to advance research into the decarbonization of alumina refining.
HILT CRC (Cooperative Research Center for Heavy Industry Low Carbon Transition) is an Australian collaborative research center bringing together industry, researchers and government to achieve technological breakthroughs to decarbonise the steel, iron, alumina and cement industries. Australia is the world’s second largest alumina refiner and largest alumina exporter.
EGA joins the ranks of international research and technology providers as HILT’s first industry partner to operate entirely outside of Australia. EGA’s Al Taweelah alumina refinery commissioned in 2019 and is the only alumina refinery in the UAE. EGA also operates aluminum smelters in Abu Dhabi and Dubai, and bauxite mines and related export facilities in the Republic of Guinea.
decarbonization
EGA was the first aluminum producer in the Middle East to join the Aluminum Stewardship Initiative (ASI) and the first aluminum producer to receive on-site certification to the ASI Performance Standard.
In alumina refining, HILT CRC focuses on the decarbonization of steam production for digestion and calcination. These two processes account for the majority of alumina refinery greenhouse gas emissions and represent the most significant decarbonization challenges facing EGA’s Al Taweelah alumina refinery.
EGA is committed to achieving net zero emissions by 2050 in line with the UAE’s Net Zero 2050 Strategic Plan, which has a roadmap to decarbonize all of its operations.
EGA Chief Executive Abdulnasser Bin Kalban said: “Joining HILT CRC enables EGA to work with the Australian alumina refining industry to find technical solutions to the toughest decarbonization challenges in alumina refining. EGA’s collaboration with other institutions in research and development It has been around for a long time, and we will continue this approach as we strive to achieve net zero emissions by 2050. I look forward to some groundbreaking outcomes from this partnership.”
strong alignment
HILT Chief Executive Felicity Lloyd said: “EGA’s aspiration to be measured among the world’s most responsible metals and mining companies, and their roadmap to net zero emissions by 2050, demonstrates alignment with the HILT CRC’s mission and strategy. Highly consistent. EGA’s alumina refinery is one of the most modern in the world and is integrated with one of EGA’s world-scale aluminum smelters. EGA can make an important contribution to decarbonization research, including benefiting Australia’s alumina industry. We look forward to collaborating on new technology developments and solutions to help fully decarbonize the alumina industry.”
EGA, together with 50 other partners from industry, research and government organisations, will conduct collaborative research through the HILT CRC, working to develop and demonstrate low carbon technologies that will help the steel, iron, alumina and cement industries to Decarbonizing heavy industry and growing the economy. – trade arab news agency
