About EGA
Since the founding of Dubai Aluminum by His Highness Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum in 1975, Emirates Global Aluminum has been innovating aluminum to make modern life possible.
Today, EGA is the world’s largest producer of “high-quality aluminum” and the largest industrial company outside the oil and gas industry in the United Arab Emirates.
EGA is owned equally by Mubadala Investment Company in Abu Dhabi and Investment Company in Dubai. It is the largest company jointly owned by the two emirates.
EGA is an integrated aluminum producer with operations ranging from bauxite mining to cast aluminum production. EGA operates aluminum smelters in Jebel Ali and Al Taweelah, an alumina refinery in Al Taweelah, bauxite mines and related export facilities in the Republic of Guinea.
EGA’s aluminum is the UAE’s second-biggest export after oil and gas. In 2021, EGA sold 2.54 million tonnes of cast metal. EGA is the sole producer in the UAE, making the UAE the fifth largest producer of aluminum in the world.
EGA has more than 400 customers in more than 50 countries. Value-added products account for 84% of EGA’s cast metal sales in 2021.
EGA’s aluminum is primarily used in the construction, automotive, packaging, aerospace and electronics industries.
About 10% of EGA’s aluminum production is sold in the UAE to about 26 downstream aluminum companies that use EGA’s aluminum to produce products. The UAE’s growing wider aluminum sector supports 60,950 jobs. The EGA itself employs more than 7,000 such personnel, including nearly 1,200 UAE nationals.
EGA has focused on technology development for over 25 years. Since the 1990s, EGA has used its own technology in every smelter expansion and has retrofitted all old production lines. In 2016, EGA became the first industrial company in the UAE to license its core industrial process technology internationally.
As a corporate citizen of the UAE, EGA expects all its operations to align with the world’s leading metals and mining companies in fulfilling their environmental and social responsibilities. In 2017, EGA became the first Middle East-based company to join the Aluminum Stewardship Initiative, a global initiative to improve sustainability and transparency in the aluminum industry. In 2019, EGA’s Al Taweelah facility became the first facility in the Middle East to receive ASI certification for its sustainability practices and performance. EGA’s Jebel Ali facility was certified in 2021. ASI Certification is the aluminum industry’s internationally recognized environmental and social performance and governance standard.
In 2021, EGA will begin production of CelestiAL solar aluminum, produced using solar energy at the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park on the outskirts of Dubai. EGA is the first company in the world to commercially produce aluminum using solar energy.
EGA was formed in 2014 from the merger of Dubai Aluminum and Emirates Aluminum.
EGA’s Jebel Ali aluminum smelter started production in 1979 as DUBAL. The site covers nearly five square kilometers, five times the size of The Dubai Mall.
EMAL started production in 2009 with the completion of its Al Taweelah aluminum smelter, the largest single-site aluminum smelter in the world. EGA’s Al Taweelah site is 6 square kilometers in size, five times larger than Al Maryah Island.
EGA has its own power stations at both locations, producing electricity to meet its needs. EGA has a generating capacity of 6,474 MW, making EGA the third largest generator in the UAE after utilities in Dubai and Abu Dhabi. EGA also produces water through desalination units at its power plants.
EGA’s Al Taweelah alumina refinery started production in April 2019. EGA’s alumina refinery is the first in the UAE and the second in the Middle East. The project reduces the UAE’s dependence on imported alumina and supplies more than 40% of EGA’s needs.
Bauxite exports from Guinea Alumina Corporation, EGA’s wholly-owned subsidiary in Guinea, began in August 2019. The GAC project is one of Guinea’s largest greenfield investments in more than 40 years.
