DUBAI – Expats have revealed how much they paid to fly to the UAE on the first day after travel rules were eased.

Joy, relief and gratitude: these sum up the emotions stranded expats experience when they arrive in the UAE on the first day after travel restrictions are eased.

Residents in the UAE who have been vaccinated against two doses of Covid-19 from 5 August; vaccinated and unvaccinated health workers, teachers, humanitarian cases and those employed by federal and local government agencies can , Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Nigeria and Uganda to the UAE.

Travelers from these six countries were previously suspended on flights to the UAE.

Earlier in the day, the first stranded residents from India landed in Dubai and Sharjah on flights operated by Emirates and Air Arabia respectively.

Remya Vikram returned to her second home after three months in India.

In early April, she traveled to her hometown for a family reunion with her husband and daughter. Due to health concerns, she decided to stay, while her husband successfully returned on April 24 — the same day the UAE announced it was suspending the entry of passengers on flights from India.

For those who follow all safety protocols, traveling is a breeze as operations are simplified.

A resident returning from Cochin, Kerala, on an Emirates flight said there were about 100 passengers there.

Another resident, Rajesh Purakkot, said he traveled to India to reunite with his family on July 2. He said he booked a ticket for 19,200 rupees (Dh950) through a travel agency in India on August 4.

“I had a PCR test on the same day. The results came out in the evening, my brother in Dubai entered all the relevant details on the GDRFA website and we were approved,” he said.

The approval process takes about 30 minutes, he added.

He also clarified the process after landing in Dubai. “We were tested for PCR when we landed at the airport. We were asked to quarantine until the results came back.”

Another resident, Abdul Rahman, said ticket prices had skyrocketed within a day. “On August 3, the fare was around Rs 18,000 (AED 890), but then I decided to do a PCR test before booking. I booked it the next day and by then, it had skyrocketed to Rs 27,050 ( 1,340 dirhams).”

He also reiterated that as long as one person has all the relevant documents, the process is smooth.

Remya said she paid 20,000 rupees for the ticket.
