Emirates is investing millions in new vegan options on board ahead of World Vegan Day on November 1, in response to the growing demand for plant-based cuisine.

A selection of vegetarian dishes has been introduced in First and Business Class, while new plant-based options have also been introduced to the Economy Class menu.

Increased demand for vegetarian food
Emirates has been offering vegetarian options on board since the 1990s. Initially, vegan requests were focused on specific routes, such as Addis Ababa, during certain times of the year, those following the Ethiopian Orthodox Church required vegetarian meals, or in the Indian subcontinent, where multiple faiths encouraged Plant-based diet.

Vegetarian dishes are now rapidly gaining popularity on US, Australia, some European and UK routes, and Emirates has noticed a huge increase in interest in vegan dishes over the past decade. Routes that have recently increased interest in vegan meals include Beirut, Cairo and Taiwan. Emirates currently offers more than 180 plant-based recipes to vegetarian customers.

menu development
Emirates has invested in developing new vegetarian menus to rival well-known restaurants. It is the largest in-flight catering facility in the world, with international chefs from 69 different countries.

In economy class, the vegetarian menu is also updated monthly, offering a wide variety of dishes for frequent travelers. Vegetarian meals in Economy Class are available for pre-order and are well received by passengers around the world.

Vegan desserts are also delicious, with tempting options such as dark chocolate custard cake with fresh juicy strawberries, lemon tart with a touch of coconut cream, and rich chocolate curd cheesecake with sweet strawberry preserves.

Emirates’ vegetarian options are nutritious and full of vegetables, fruits and vegetables sourced from several UAE suppliers, including locally grown kale, heirloom cherry tomatoes, salad leaves and herbs from Bustanica. Bustanica, the world’s largest hydroponic vertical farm, was invested $40 million by Emirates Catering.

Bustanica Farms is driven by powerful technologies – machine learning, artificial intelligence and advanced methods – and a dedicated in-house team including agronomists, engineers, horticulturalists and plant scientists. The continuous production cycle ensures that the product is very fresh and clean, and is grown without pesticides, herbicides or chemicals. All Emirates passengers will enjoy delicious leafy greens including lettuce, arugula, mixed salad greens and spinach straight from Bustanica, with plans to grow more fruit and vegetables in the future. – arab trade news agency
