Emirates News Agency – 6th International Rain Enhancement Forum kicks off in Abu Dhabi

ABU DHABI, 24th January, 2023 (WAM) — Under the patronage of His Excellency Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister in the Presidency, the Sixth International Rain Enhancement The Forum (IREF) kicked off at the Conrad Hotel Etihad Towers Abu Dhabi. The forum is the first of its kind to address the world’s pressing water and sustainable development issues.

Organized by the National Center of Meteorology (NCM) through the UAE Scientific Research Program on Rain Enhancement (UAEREP), the event will take place from 24-26 January 2023. It revolves around five strategic pillars: collaboration, innovation, capacity building, artificial intelligence and applied research.

Speaking on his behalf, HH Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed, NCM Director General Dr Abdulla Al Mandous said, “The UAE continues to deliver on its commitment to make innovation a central part of its government’s scientific and economic agenda in support of global environmental goals, especially in relation to climate Change and goals related to water security.As our country prepares to host key decision-makers and policymakers at the 28th Conference of the Parties (COP28), we have recently launched several ambitious initiatives, programs and The plans, plans and strategies will strengthen the UAE’s position as one of the most active and committed nations in the principles of environmental sustainability.

“Given the growing challenges facing our environment, climate and scarce water resources, which are global, regional and local priorities, the scientific community’s relentless efforts to enhance water security and enhance global water sustainability Deserving everyone’s appreciation and recognition. Through this unique international forum dedicated to the science of rainfall enhancement, we reiterate our full support for the efforts of the scientific community to advance this promising field and to replenish groundwater reserves in arid and semi-arid regions of the world. “UAEREP is a noteworthy example of the UAE’s aspirations to become a global hub for advancing the global water security agenda, as evidenced by the achievements of the programme’s winning projects over the past four cycles. As we enter the new phase of our programme’s journey, The advancement of the scientific, technical and operational aspects of rain enhancement research has become our collective responsibility. To achieve this, we are determined to work closely with top scientific institutions and renowned researchers, enabling them to find innovative solutions for sustainable development in Strengthening our water resources at a time when large-scale urbanization poses challenges and puts increasing pressure on our finite resources.

With the strong participation of leading international and national experts, researchers and scientists on water security, water sustainability and influencing weather, IREF seeks to consolidate its status as a global platform for exploring key topics related to water sustainability and rainfall enhancement research status.

The latest edition of the event was attended by 46 speakers and panelists from 18 countries around the world, including opening remarks by Professor Petteri Taalas, Secretary-General of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), and Mariam bint Mohammed, Minister of Meteorology Almheiri, Ministry of Climate Change and Environment, addressed the event via a video recorded address.

Al Mandous added, “The 6th International Rainfall Enhancement Forum is an important platform that the UAE provides to the world to achieve the security and sustainability of water supply and to address the challenges of climate change. In her opening address, Alya Al Mazroui, Director of UAEEREP, announced the call for submissions for Cycle 5 of the programme, which offers grants of up to US$1.5 million (AED5.511 million) to each awardee, distributing research proposals over three years . In its fifth cycle, the program welcomes innovative research proposals focusing on two high priority areas: enhanced cloud formation and rainfall enhancement.
