ABU DHABI, 5th June, 2023 (WAM) — The Abu Dhabi Department of Community Development, the Department of Municipalities and Transport, and the Abu Dhabi Arabic Language Centre, part of the Abu Dhabi Department of Culture and Tourism, have signed an agreement on Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to implement the second phase of the Scan and Learn Arabic program, an app that allows smartphone and tablet users to scan objects around a city and then translate their names into Arabic.
The three-year agreement documents the parties’ efforts in an initial memorandum of understanding signed in November 2021, covering a pilot period for a scanning and learning Arabic mobile app, as well as discussions on promoting a more cohesive approach and a collaborative research and tolerant society.
The new memorandum aims to increase the penetration of Arabic in daily life in Abu Dhabi, both by native speakers and non-native speakers, by promoting the use of smartphone apps and their scanning technology. Goals include preserving the Arabic language and helping to cement national identity; increasing the use of Arabic on social media platforms and in the workplace; and increasing the learning of commonly used Arabic vocabulary among citizens, residents and tourists, with the hope that wider learning of the language will lead to increased living in the UAE greater social cohesion among different ethnic groups.

Providing a mobile app that showcases Arabic has become an Human essentials. We are promoting the Arabic language through technology while promoting the use of technology in Arabic. This initiative will have a positive impact on the way these generations use digital content and Arabic, thereby driving an increase in its future usage .”
Shaikha Al Hosani, Executive Director, Monitoring and Social Innovation, Abu Dhabi Department of Community Development, said, “The Scan and Learn Arabic initiative is strengthening the bonds, communication and interdependence between the Emirate of Abu Dhabi and the various communities that live here.
“It creates new opportunities for non-Arabic speakers to deepen their understanding of the local culture and better integrate into society by introducing them to Arabic vocabulary and the roots of the local Emirati colloquial language.”
Rashid Al Kaabi, Acting Executive Director, Operational Support Department, Ministry of Municipalities and Transport, noted the importance of cooperation between relevant authorities to provide tools to enhance the use of Arabic in all areas of daily life.
