Emirates News Agency – Abu Dhabi to host World Federation of the Deaf Congress in 2027

ABU DHABI, 11th July, 2023 (WAM) — Abu Dhabi will host the World Federation of the Deaf (WFD) Congress in 2027 for the first time in the Middle East and North Africa region, led by the Senior People of Zayed Determination. Organization (ZHO) in collaboration with the Abu Dhabi Department of Culture and Tourism, ADNEC and the UAE Association of the Deaf.

The event provided a platform for experts, industry leaders and more than 2,000 deaf participants from 125 countries to exchange knowledge and discuss efforts to increase inclusion in Abu Dhabi and around the world.

The global gathering provided an opportunity to reflect on Abu Dhabi’s efforts under the guidance of wise leadership and showcase the emirate’s success in supporting and empowering communities of determination of all kinds, especially the deaf community. It will also propose a series of initiatives and policies that meet international standards and demonstrate care for determined people to become active participants in the process of construction and sustainable development. It also emphasizes efforts to create an appropriate environment that improves the quality of life of people of determination and their families and facilitates their integration into society.

His Highness Sheikh Khalid bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Chairman of the ZHO Board of Directors, congratulated Abu Dhabi for its first bid to host the WFD 20th World Congress in 2027 in the MENA region.

Sheikh Khalid hailed the achievement, which is in line with the wise leadership’s concern for the people of the UAE, seeing it as a fundamental pillar of rejuvenation and progress, including all groups in UAE society, especially people of determination, stating The great success of the UAE in organizing major international events, especially those targeting ‘Men of Determination’, has yielded good results and helped to highlight the UAE’s capabilities.

Major Airman Faris Khalaf Al Mazrouei, Commander-in-Chief of Abu Dhabi Police, said Abu Dhabi Police, in cooperation with ZHO and strategic partners, supports Abu Dhabi to host the 20th WFD World Congress in 2027.

He noted that the Congress had made an important contribution in realizing a shared vision to integrate determined individuals from the deaf community into society, raising awareness of their rights and abilities and the importance of their participation in the development process of society.

ZHO Secretary-General Abdullah Al Humaidan expressed his great pleasure at the WFD World Congress being awarded the right to host Abu Dhabi and welcomed the decision of the 19th Congress which was recently held in Jeju, South Korea.

Hu Maidan stressed that preparations for the major international event, which has been held every four years since 1951, are already underway.

The purpose of the meeting is to exchange the best international practices, experiences and knowledge of the participating countries, to exchange views and opinions on various fields of deaf rehabilitation and to provide them with all necessary care, and to establish relations with national organizations and federations concerned with the deaf. Connections and cooperation between deaf people around the world, and strengthening of connections and cooperation between deaf people on all continents represented by participating countries. The conferences also deepen and strengthen the role of society by contributing to support of the field and by providing opportunities for deaf people to participate and express their views through congresses and side events.

The Congress features major cultural events, including theatrical performances, films, exhibitions, art and visits to the region’s most famous landmarks. WFD works to advance the rights of deaf people around the world, focusing on improving the status of national sign languages, providing better education for deaf people, improving access to information and services, and improving the human rights of deaf people in development.
