ABU DHABI, 17th March, 2023 (WAM) — ASPIRE, the technology transformation arm of the Abu Dhabi Advanced Technology Research Council, ATRC, has announced the launch of the Abu Dhabi Autonomous Racing League.
The announcement is in line with ASPIRE’s vision to establish a world-class research and development (R&D) center in Abu Dhabi.
Will be the world’s largest autonomous racing league, with events starting with the first autonomous car race in the second quarter of 2024.
The self-driving car race will be held at the Yas Marina Circuit, the first in a series of self-driving car races. The Abu Dhabi Auto Racing League, with a prize pool of Dh8 million (US$2.25 million), will use Dallara-built Super Formula cars, which have been given permission by the Japan Racing Promotion (JRP). Super Formula cars are the fastest cars in the world outside of Formula 1, and they’re equipped with enough self-driving racing gear.
A core objective of the Abu Dhabi Autonomous Racing Alliance is to push the boundaries of autonomous vehicles by hosting challenges to advance the development of autonomous racing and artificial intelligence (AI). In addition, applied research in preparation for the league will develop cutting-edge and low-risk solutions to significantly reduce fuel consumption and carbon emissions through improved efficiency, while raising safety and performance standards in motorsport and commercial transport.
The JRP will enable ASPIRE to utilize one of the most advanced racing cars in the world to push the limits and high speed of autonomous driving by providing the Abu Dhabi Automated Racing League with exclusive access to the Dallara Super Formula car.
Race spectators will experience face-to-face self-driving racing through live updates of augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) infographics and on-screen displays.
Faisal Al Bannai, ATRC Secretary General, said: “We are proud to announce the formation of the Abu Dhabi Autonomous Racing Consortium as we set new benchmarks for autonomous vehicles, helping them get ahead and prepare for the unknown, because They are becoming more mainstream. In addition to building a community platform for motorsport fans, Abu Dhabi Autonomous Motorsports League will feature an open development model that supports faster progress, faster testing and greater innovation. Learning and reinforcement learning will be key to gathering data and developing the technology for these vehicles.”
JRP President Yoshihisa Ueno added: “As Japan’s premier racing series SUPER FORMULA, we are delighted to partner with ASPIRE to host the Abu Dhabi Autonomous Racing League to witness the further fusion of racing and technology.”
Andrea Pontremoli, CEO of Dallara, commented: “In line with our vision to design and build the fastest and safest cars in the world, we are delighted to partner with ASPIRE to shape the future of mobility. new levels of performance, safety, efficiency and, importantly, sustainability.”
The first self-driving car race will be the first in a series of self-driving car competitions launched by the Abu Dhabi Autonomous Racing Federation in 2024, which will include autonomous off-road racing, autonomous drone racing and more.
