ABU DHABI, 5th January, 2023 (WAM) — The Anwar Gargash Diplomatic Academy, AGDA, on Wednesday hosted Rana Nusseibeh, Assistant Minister for Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation for Political Affairs and Permanent Representative of the UAE to the United Nations. The eye-opening discussion reviewed the UAE’s progress in its first year on the UN Security Council.
The discussion was moderated by AGDA Director General Nickolay Mladenov and was also attended by members of the diplomatic community, ambassadors, foreign policy experts, academics and AGDA students.
The interactive dialogue reaffirmed that the UAE will continue to work with other member states to ensure that the institution effectively addresses current and future challenges. It highlighted the UAE’s active and critical role in climate change, the UN Sustainable Development Goals, women, peace and security agenda, international law and peacekeeping.
Nusseibeh lays out key moments in the council’s past year. She also provided insights based on her experience with the Security Council, which plays a vital role in overseeing peacekeeping operations.
Ambassador Nusseibeh said: “In the UAE’s first year on the UN Security Council, we have consistently expressed our vision that an open, cooperative and inclusive world order is more indispensable today than ever before. Different national perspectives This is exactly why we need the multilateral system: to bring countries together, to ensure that we talk to each other and find peaceful solutions to important global problems.”
She added: “Our tenure on the Security Council has been a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for our diplomats and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Its legacy is not only the resolutions we pass, but also the UAE diplomat class, many of whom have been trained by AGDA, They will continue to do great things on behalf of our country.”
Mladenov said, ‘The UAE has become a non-permanent member of the Council at a critical moment for the world. This is the country’s second time on the Council after serving in 1986-1987. UAE diplomacy demonstrates its commitment to strengthening the role of the United Nations, advancing multilateralism, supporting the humanitarian efforts of the United Nations, and contributing to coexistence, peace and global security. “

The Security Council is made up of five permanent members — China, France, the Russian Federation, the United Kingdom and the United States — and ten members, including the United Arab Emirates, elected by the General Assembly for two-year terms. It is the only UN body authorized to issue resolutions binding on member states.
