Emirates News Agency – Emirates Publishing: Leaders shaping Cop28

[ad_1]

ABU DHABI, 13th January, 2023 (WAM) — 2023 has only just begun and the severity of the climate emergency is already evident, a local English-language newspaper has commented.

In an editorial on Friday, The National said: “California’s persistent drought has been well documented, and it has recently been inundated with rain and flooding. On a more positive note, strategic research provider Bloomberg New Energy Finance predicts a carbon-free energy will grow by 18%.”

These issues and more will be discussed at this year’s UN climate summit, Cop28, in the UAE. It’s one of the most important conferences the region has ever hosted, and it’s fast taking shape.

On Wednesday, the country announced its president-elect and climate advocate for the summit. Dr. Sultan Al Jaber is the Chair-Elect. Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology; He is also the Managing Director and Group CEO of ADNOC and the Chairman of Masdar, and has been the UAE Special Envoy for Climate Change since November 2020. He will primarily lead global negotiations.

Shamma Al Mazrui, Minister of State for Youth, will be the Youth Climate Champion, and Razan Al Mubarak, President of the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Managing Director of the Abu Dhabi Environment Agency, will be the UN High Level Champion on Climate Change.

These three roles provide the necessary scope to most effectively cover such a wide range of topics in a year leading the COP process. Referring to all constituencies that need to be involved, Dr Al Jaber emphasized, “We will take an inclusive approach that involves all stakeholders from the public and private sectors, civil society, the scientific community, women and youth. We must Particular attention will be paid to how climate action can meet the needs of countries in the global South that will be most affected by climate change trends.”

“With such a team, the UAE will try to create a police force that will benefit all countries and most constituencies. There is no one-size-fits-all approach to tackling the climate crisis, but the green transition that the UAE is undergoing will be beneficial to many countries.” Inspired by it,” the newspaper said.

It developed rapidly in the late 20th century, a process initiated by the discovery of large hydrocarbon reserves. Today, the industry remains an important part of its economy, but energy expertise accumulated over decades is also being translated into innovations in renewable energy. It has invested tens of billions of dollars in measures to limit emissions and was the first country in the region to ratify the Paris Agreement. It is also the first country to commit to net zero emissions by 2050.

The UAE is located in the region of the world where the effects of climate change are being felt first and worst. Temperatures in the Middle East and eastern Mediterranean are rising almost twice as fast as the rest of the world, according to a 2022 study in Geophysical Review. Wealthier countries can respond to these challenges more flexibly, but poorer countries are far more vulnerable.

It continued, “This is why it is so important to hold Cop28 in the Middle East, and it is here that the global response to the progress the world is making in combating climate change will take place. The region will be the fastest and most difficult to be affected by climate change.” Many of these countries have emitted relatively little over time in terms of historical emissions, but have provided the largest share of advanced economies since the Industrial Revolution. The high level paid a disproportionate price.

“COP28 is an important moment to recognize and address this inequality globally. The fact that the last conference was held in Egypt further strengthens the regional momentum.”

The Abu Dhabi-based daily concluded by quoting Dr Al Jaber as saying: “The UAE is approaching Cop28 with a strong sense of responsibility and the highest possible ambition.” He is confident that the airline will achieve its goals this year. This is an important foundation for building a strong Cop28. But it will only succeed if all members are on the same page.
