Emirates News Agency – EU celebrates ‘Europe Day’ in UAE

ABU DHABI, 11th May, 2023 (WAM) — The European Union Mission to the United Arab Emirates hosted a diplomatic reception in Abu Dhabi on Tuesday evening to celebrate its 73rd anniversary with UAE partners, government officials, key figures and members A “Europe Day” for diplomats and international organizations.

The event, held at the Park Hyatt Abu Dhabi, was attended by Ayesha Bin Suwaidan, Director General, European Affairs Division, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation; Andrea Matteo Fontana, EU Ambassador to the UAE; and ambassadors of EU Member States and other countries.

Every year on 9 May, the European Union commemorates Europe Day as a day to celebrate the values ​​of peace and solidarity, and to commemorate the historic 1950 Schuman Declaration that paved the way for the creation of the European Union as we know it today the way.

Andrea Matteo Fontana, EU Ambassador to the UAE, praised the long-standing relationship and exchanges between the EU and the UAE.

“When the late Sheikh Zayed, the late founding father of the UAE, visited Europe in the 1950s, the European Union as we know it today didn’t even exist. But what brings nations and peoples together — rather than waging pointless wars — — and the idea of ​​laying the groundwork for mutual progress and development resonated strongly with him. It was out of the same desire that the rulers of the emirates created the successful federation known today as the United Arab Emirates in 1971. The European Union is now associated with the UAE There are many shared values, including unity in diversity, tolerance and respect, the pursuit of peace, stability and prosperity, and a moral duty to help countries in need.”

The event was attended by more than 250 guests who enjoyed an extraordinary musical program presented by the world-class string quartet “Gadrew Way” from the Czech Republic, which has performed at many festivals and concert venues, including Expo 2020 Dubai.

The quartet kicked off the festivities with a unique interpretation of the EU and UAE national anthems. They also performed classical pieces by European composers, including Czech composer Berzy Smetana’s “Vltava”, followed by German composer Johann Pachelbel’s “Canon”, and finally the French “Carmen” by composer Georges Bizet.

Europe Day is celebrated in Europe by all EU institutions and EU member states and globally by more than 140 EU delegations around the world.
