SHARJAH, 28th January, 2023 (WAM) — The round of 16 and quarter-finals of the UAE Resident Open, part of the UAE Wild Card Championship, kicked off on Friday and took place today at the Padel Arena in Sharjah, More than 190 senior padel players from the UAE and the GCC vie for one of six wild card entries for the World Padel Tour.
Sponsored by Emirates Post Group in partnership with the Emirates Padel Association and Abu Dhabi Sports Council, the UAE Wild Card Championship comprises six events and will be held in Abu Dhabi, Dubai and Sharjah from January 27 to February 12. weekend.
The tournament consists of three categories of competition: the UAE Residents Open, the UAE Nationals Open and the GCC Nationals Open, with each category hosting men’s and women’s competitions. Up to now, more than 90 teams have signed up for the six play-offs, including more than 50 men’s teams and more than 35 women’s teams.
This weekend’s play-offs for UAE residents include the round of 32 yesterday, the round of 16 and quarter-finals today and the semi-finals on Sunday 29 January.
The second championship for UAE nationals will take the same knockout format at the World Padel Academy in Dubai from 3-5 February. Senior padel players from other GCC countries will take part in the third round of the championship at the Abu Dhabi Padel Hub at the Zayed Cricket Stadium on 10-11 February.
Meanwhile, the final of the six tournaments is scheduled for February 12 at the Padel Hub in Abu Dhabi, with each winning team receiving a wild card that will qualify them to play the world’s top seeded padel in a qualifying round of Modon. Abu Dhabi Padel Master, will be held at 321 Sports, Hudayriyat Island from 18th to 20th February. This will be followed by the Modon Abu Dhabi Padel Master main draw at Bab Al Nojoum, Hudayriyat Island, Abu Dhabi, from 21st to 26th February. The six finalists will also receive AED 10,000 each.
