Emirates News Agency – Johnson Controls signs UAE Climate Responsible Company Pledge

ABU DHABI, 18th January, 2023 (WAM) — Johnson Controls, the global leader in smart, healthy and sustainable buildings, has recently signed the Climate Responsible Company Pledge, initiated by the UAE, as part of its commitment to achieve net zero goals. Ministry of the Environment (MOCCAE).

The pledge reinforces the UAE’s climate leadership in the region ahead of the UAE’s hosting of the 2023 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP28), as it prepares to harness innovation and cutting-edge technology through partnerships between the public and private sectors to demonstrate how the world Response and response to climate change.

The pledge was signed during this year’s Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week, which was themed ‘Uniting for Climate Action at COP28’.

Johnson Controls, represented by Mohammad Khalid, Vice President and General Manager, Middle East and Africa, signed the pledge during the 8th National Dialogue on Climate Action (NDCA), hosted by MOCCE. The NDCA is a sector-specific congress attended by the Minister of Climate Change and Environment, Mariam bint Mohammed Almheiri.

In signing this pledge, Johnson Controls further strengthened its commitment to sustainable development. Most recently, the company won the 4th UAE Energy Awards 2022 in the ‘Private Sector Energy Efficiency’ category at the World Green Economy Summit. Johnson Controls is helping Dubai Airport achieve significant energy savings, a feat expected to reduce its carbon footprint by more than 5,000 tons per year.

Khalid said: “We are grateful to MOCCAE for giving us the opportunity to join the Climate Responsible Company Pledge, which will support the UAE’s 2050 goal of net zero emissions. We strongly believe in the ministry’s efforts to strengthen cross-sector collaboration with Johnson Controls to accelerate climate action and Aligned with a vision to make a measurable difference in protecting our environment.”

As part of a partnership between the UAE government and the country’s private sector to tackle climate change, Johnson Controls UAE will measure and report greenhouse gas emissions and develop plans to further reduce them. The move is in line with Johnson Controls’ commitment to reduce Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions by 55% and Scope 3 GHG emissions by 16% by 2030, with the Science-Based Targets initiative and 2040 Approval to achieve net zero operations. Globally, Johnson Controls has achieved more than a 40% reduction in Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions since 2017.

Additionally, this commitment demonstrates that Johnson Controls is developing and deploying the cutting-edge technologies needed to combat climate change.

Johnson Controls’ efforts also include focusing attention on identifying areas where the most significant carbon reductions will be achieved across the value chain, including customers, partners and suppliers. The company will also assist other private entities in the UAE to map out their decarbonization journey by developing a plan that focuses on key steps such as design, digitization and deployment.

MOCCAE launched the UAE Climate Responsible Company Commitment to increase private sector participation in the country’s decarbonisation drive in line with the UAE’s Net Zero by 2050 initiative.

In addition to the MOCCAE-led initiative, Johnson Controls has joined other global alliances and initiatives, including the Net Zero Innovation and Technology Enterprise Alliance, recently announced at COP27, and the Sustainable Markets initiative, which Johnson Controls leads the Sustainable Buildings Working Group to accelerate adoption of. Zero buildings.
