ABU DHABI, 2nd January, 2023 (WAM) — Executives working in the UAE government and private sector have started using artificial intelligence in various areas of their daily work, thanks to an executive program hosted by the Mohamed bin Zayed University for Artificial Intelligence (AI) Abu Dhabi Intelligence Agency (MBZUAI), according to a senior official.
Sultan Al Hajji, Vice President of Public Affairs and Alumni Relations at MBZUAI, told the Emirates News Agency (WAM) that participants in the MBZUAI Executive Program (MEP) come from various backgrounds.
AI in Everyday Work
“Towards the end of the three-month program, participants were challenged to produce something that could be applied in their field. The participating executives undertook a number of research projects under the supervision of our faculty and postdoctoral fellows , and have started to apply the research results in their daily work,” Al Hajji revealed in a recent interview.
He cites the example of diplomats, “When they go back to their entities, they tell me that after using AI applications in their work, they start to see things differently.”
He pointed out that since collecting and analyzing data is a major part of all departments, which is the core business of artificial intelligence, they can now do their jobs faster, easier and more efficiently.
Launched in September 2021, the MEP provides leaders with the knowledge and support they need to help their organizations harness the potential of AI to address national challenges.

In March 2022, MBZUAI celebrates the graduation of its first 41 participants. The University concluded its second edition of the MEP in August 2022. The second cohort consists of 43 leaders such as chief executive officers, director-generals and executive directors from public and private organizations across the UAE.
The program has 12 weeks of rigorous coursework, lectures and collaborative project work. Essential topics include an introduction to the past, present, and future of AI and machine learning; AI, machine learning, and the economy; linguistic cognition and intelligence; visual cognition and intelligence; AI ethics and policymaking; and the future of robotics.
Two capstone projects in the queue include an early cancer detection method; an AI-based platform to reduce fraud; a weather forecasting system; a unified customer service platform; a Web3-driven financial management platform; an energy management platform; supply chain forecasting platform; and an intelligent threat alert system.
“We have created an AI community where current and past players play a vital role in communicating, collaborating and collaborating with each other to advance the UAE’s industry,” the official said.
Pioneer of Arabic NLP, Genome Sequencing
The official noted that President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan established MBZUAI in 2019 as part of the UAE’s efforts to become a global leader in artificial intelligence.
Currently, the university is offering master’s and doctoral programs in machine learning (ML), computer vision (CV), and natural language processing (NLP), with plans to add master’s and doctoral programs.
The university is expanding its research in the field of NLP, which is a broad field, because “we want to be a pioneer in Arabic NLP, which is the advanced application of artificial intelligence and machine learning to understand Arabic and its dialects,” says the university. officials emphasized.
NLP is a subfield of linguistics, computer science (CS) and artificial intelligence that helps machines process and understand human language so they can automate repetitive tasks. Everyday examples include machine translation, automated summarization, automated spell correction, and voice-controlled personal assistants on smartphones.
“Using machine learning and computer vision, we are also leading the way in genome sequencing [a scientific process to decipher the genetic material found in an organism or virus] Because we have the capabilities and expertise of world-renowned AI scientists,” Al Hajji said.

Within two years of its founding, the university gained global recognition. CSRanking – the metrics-based ranking of the world’s top computer science institutions – ranks MBZUAI among the top 25 worldwide in its focus areas: artificial intelligence, computer vision, machine learning and natural language processing.
Al Hajji emphasized: “Achieving the highest global ranking in just two years is a huge achievement in both academia and research.”
