ABU DHABI, 27th February, 2023 (WAM) — The Department of Municipalities and Transport, DMT, has revealed the achievements of its programs and initiatives aimed at expanding green spaces and tree planting activities in Abu Dhabi.
The announcement comes after President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan declared 2023 the UAE Year of Sustainable Development.
The theme of the Year of Sustainability is “Today for Tomorrow”, which draws on the rich heritage of the UAE to inspire sustainable practices across fields and sectors for a more prosperous future.
As part of its focus on urban well-being and the promotion of life-long health of biodiversity ecosystems, DMT’s strategic focus is to continuously update master plans, collect and analyze data to identify those affected by urban development and curb urban sprawl. In this regard, the DMT and its affiliates are promoting the Forum to identify groups or individuals directly affected by urban development and invite them to participate in collaborative programs that identify population growth and future development patterns.
The department emphasizes that it implements the highest international standards when applying the concept of the Urban Growth Boundary (UGB), developing rules, policies and guidelines on urban development and its environmental impact, a comprehensive pro-cyclical plan that periodically reassesses economic The progressive expansion of cities draws boundaries to protect forests, protected areas, rural areas, natural resources, historic sites, and farmland.
DMT estimates that the emirate of Abu Dhabi has about 5 million trees of all types within the urban growth area, with a per capita tree ownership rate of 2.7 trees, covering 7% of Abu Dhabi City, 15% of Al Ain and 30% of Al Dhafrah %area.
