Emirates News Agency – UAE chairs plenary working group to participate in First and Fourth Committees on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space during 77th UN General Assembly

ABU DHABI, 2nd November, 2022 (WAM) — Last week, a delegation from the United Arab Emirates joined members of the international space community to discuss the peaceful uses of outer space during the 77th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA 77). space problem.

Omran Sharaf, Senior Assistant Minister for Scientific and Technical Affairs of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, led the visit as Chairman of the United Nations Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (COPUOS). Ibrahim Qassem, Deputy Director General of the UAE Space Agency, delivered the UAE’s statement at the Fourth Committee meeting.

As Chairman of COPUOS, Omran Sharaf facilitated the adoption of the draft resolution on space and global health, as well as the omnibus draft resolution proposed by the UAE. Both resolutions were adopted by the Fourth Committee with the full consensus of the participating Member States.

Both resolutions demonstrate the commitment of Member States to foster partnership and cooperation among countries with advanced space programmes and encourage participation in space-related activities through various capacity-building initiatives. Sharaf also noted that the team of space weather experts that developed the second resolution completed their report, which contains the results of their eight years of work.

Sharaf said: “I would like to underline the commitment and dedication of the members of the Committee to making progress in this area. It is now important to continue working to strengthen the role of the Committee and its subcommittees, supported by the Office of External Space Affairs, as A unique multilateral forum for dialogue and cooperation.

“Strengthening partnerships among Member States and other stakeholders, fostering dialogue between spacefaring and emerging spacefaring nations, and promoting greater participation in space by all nations are critical to our collective spaceflight efforts for humanity important.”

For his part, Al Qasim highlighted the UAE’s space program renewal and the nation’s commitment to using space to improve quality of life, finding solutions to problems that could threaten space activities, and bridging regulatory gaps created by rapid technological advancements in space systems.

“We recognize the importance of international cooperation, and in our new space exploration mission to explore the asteroid belt, we are leveraging the legacy created by our Mars mission and expanding collaboration with our international partners,” said Al Qasim.

The First and Fourth Committees of the UN General Assembly also held a joint panel discussion on possible challenges to space security and sustainability in 2022-2023.

The UAE’s chairmanship of COPUOS in 2022-2023 reflects its emphasis on the responsible and peaceful use of outer space. The UAE has committed to open dialogue and international cooperation to explore innovative solutions to some of the most pressing emerging challenges and opportunities presented by the space sector.
