NEW YORK, 11th July, 2023 (WAM) — The United Arab Emirates participated in the High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development in New York for a dialogue to share its progress towards the achievement of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
A high-level government delegation took part in the first major meeting examining pathways for partnerships to accelerate the achievement of SDG 17.
From the General Secretariat of National Committees for Sustainable Development Goals, Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Global Initiative (MBRGI), Abu Dhabi Development Fund, United Arab Emirates International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) Representatives of the UAE delegation at Missions, COP28, SDG Young include the Leaders Programme, the Federal Center for Competitiveness and Statistics, and the Ministry of Cabinet Affairs’ Government Experience Exchange Programme.
From July 10-19, the delegation will showcase initiatives and programs aimed at accelerating sustainable development. They will also work with international organisations, NGOs, scientists, research institutes, academia and young people to discuss the most effective ways to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals, exchange knowledge and foster collaboration.
Abdullah Nasser Al Ruta, vice-chairman of the National Committee for Sustainable Development Goals, said the UAE is keen to share its sustainable development model with the world. “My delegation will stress the critical role partnerships already play in strengthening international cooperation.”
“Strengthening the means of implementation of SDG 17 and revitalizing the global partnership for sustainable development is critical. Our aim is to showcase the collaborative efforts of government entities across the UAE in advancing sustainable development, both locally and globally.”
The UAE delegation also participated in the opening and plenary sessions of the High-Level Political Forum, where all participating delegations came together on the first day.
Dr. Nawal Al Hosany, UAE Permanent Representative to IRENA, reiterated that the 14-year strong and longstanding relationship between the UAE and the intergovernmental body marks a significant change in global renewable energy advocacy and deployment.
Speaking on the sidelines of the high-level political forum, Hosani said: “Renewable energy plays a key role in driving sustainable development, energy system transformation and youth empowerment. If we are to improve energy access for all – sustainable Innovative cooperation across the international community is essential if SDG 7 is not achieved. Progress towards SDG 7 will also help drive progress on the other 17 interlinked SDGs, from gender equality to climate action to decent jobs and economic growth.”
Mohamed Saif Al Suwaidi, Director General of Abu Dhabi Development Fund, said: “As we convene the United Nations High-Level Political Forum, our common goal is to implement the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The UAE through Abu Dhabi Development Fund, remains steadfastly committed to promoting sustainable global development. Our focus is on mobilizing financial resources, fostering innovation, meeting the needs of countries and driving change together to ensure a sustainable future for all.”
Dr Abdulkareem Sultan Al Olama, CEO of MBRGI, commented: “The Mohammad bin Rashid Al Maktoum Global Initiative’s participation in the United Nations High Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development in New York is in line with our commitment to the 17 Sustainable Development Goals. MBRGI’s mission is closely linked to the Sustainable Development Goals, which include providing assistance to impoverished communities around the world.
“Participating in this forum is an ideal opportunity for us to showcase our efforts to ‘end poverty’ (including humanitarian campaigns) and our contribution to ‘zero hunger’ (including launching a Ramadan food aid campaign). ‘Good health and well-being’, ‘clean water and sanitation’ and other projects that align,” he added.
Dr Waleed Al-Ali, Adviser to the Mohammad bin Rashid Al Maktoum Global Initiative and Secretary-General of Digital Schools, said: “The Mohammad bin Rashid Al Maktoum Global Initiative is involved in The United Nations High Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development New York embodies its vision and strong belief in the need to support international efforts to achieve the 17 Sustainable Development major achievements in the initiative (namely the Madrasa platform and digital schools).
He further stated: “To achieve our global goals, we are committed to forging impactful global partnerships, actively contributing to supporting global education, and furthering our mission of empowering communities for a better future.”
Since its establishment in 2012, the High-Level Political Forum has been the main platform for the United Nations to discuss sustainable development. It plays a central role in monitoring and reviewing the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
The theme of this forum is “Accelerating the recovery from the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) and fully implementing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development at all levels”, with an in-depth review of Sustainable Development Goals 6, 7, 9, 11, and 17.
