Emirates News Agency – UAE Government, ARADO release report on Arab sustainability, government actions

ABU DHABI, 5th June, 2023 (WAM) — During the Forum on Sustainable Development and Government Action in Egypt, the UAE Government and the Arab Administrative Development Sustainability and Government Action: The Case for Arab Governments”, as part of the UAE Year of Sustainable Development initiative.

The event was attended by Ohood bint Khalfan Al Roumi, Minister of State for Development and Future of Government, Nasser Al Hatlan Al Qahtani, Director General of ARADO, and other Arab ministers and officials involved in executive development and sustainable development.

The report made several recommendations based on interviews with 1,800 Arab government officials, including developing smart cities, promoting green financing, leveraging private sector resources and emphasizing the importance of raising awareness in related areas.

Dr. Sultan bin Ahmed Al Jaber, Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology and Chair-designate of COP28, said that the government, in collaboration with relevant stakeholders, has a vital role to play in mitigating the effects of climate change by drafting suitable strategies to achieve global climate goals, Such as regional and international organizations.

“The report supports our focus at COP28 on intensifying efforts to achieve a major shift in climate action,” he said.

During the forum, Al Roumi delivered a keynote speech on the importance of developing policies and laws that encourage a sustainable green transition and fostering public-private partnerships to achieve climate neutrality.

She added that the report will help Arab governments prepare to achieve sustainability and address climate change, as well as address the associated economic and social challenges, pointing to the key opportunities for long-term economic growth identified in the report, such as drafting an aggressive climate policy and measures, emphasizing the need for flexibility to accommodate green government requirements.

She also noted that the report is part of the UAE government’s climate action efforts and part of the UAE’s commitment to develop sustainable solutions to environmental challenges, in partnership with President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan The declared Year of Sustainable Development and the country’s readiness to host the twenty-eighth session of the Conference of the Parties.

Al Qahtani said the report, published in partnership between ARADO, the Arab League and the UAE government, comes at an opportune time to assess Arab governments’ readiness to tackle climate change and seize opportunities for green economic growth.

He added that the report reflects the commitment of Arab governments to protect the environment and limit the negative effects of climate change.

He further added that this initiative will promote Arab administrative development, which is key to achieving comprehensive and sustainable development, stressing his confidence that Arab governments will respond and cooperate appropriately.

The report highlights that hosting COP28 in the UAE is an opportunity to attract investment to the region and forge partnerships across a range of sectors.
