ABU DHABI, 4th March, 2023 (WAM) — The United Arab Emirates and the Italian Republic have announced the upgrading of their relationship to the level of Strategic Partnership.
The announcement was made during a meeting between President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan and Italian Prime Minister Giorgio Meloni at the Al Shati Palace in Abu Dhabi today.
During the meeting, the two sides announced a “Declaration of Intent” to strengthen cooperation between the United Nations Conference of the Parties to Climate Change (COP28) and climate action, as well as a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on cooperation in energy transition projects between ADNOC and Italian energy group Eni for sustainable development initiatives.
The MoU aims to strengthen cooperation in the fields of emission reduction, new energy technologies and low-carbon solutions.
It also helps strengthen the long-term strategic partnership between the two companies, promote energy security and accelerate low-carbon economic and industrial growth.
Areas of cooperation include reducing carbon emissions with a focus on carbon capture, utilization and storage technologies, improving energy efficiency, co-investing in green hydrogen, and renewable and clean energy.

“The governments of the United Arab Emirates and the Italian Republic, based on the close ties between the two countries and the common goals and common interests of the two governments, and on the occasion of Italian Prime Minister Giorgio Meloni’s first visit to Italy, she met with UAE President Sheikh His Highness Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, discussed and exchanged views on the latest international situation, explored ways to strengthen cooperation in the fields of politics, economy, humanitarian, culture, climate and energy between the two countries Transformation, while emphasizing the commitment of the two governments to strengthen bilateral relations between the UAE and Italy based on trust, understanding and mutual respect for the benefit and prosperity of the peoples of both countries, and to conclude a Memorandum of Understanding between the UAE and Italy in accordance with all agreements, and Recognizing that the current progress is in the field of multi-dimensional and multi-field cooperation, the two sides agreed to promote the development of bilateral relations, reflecting the mutual firm determination of both sides to carry out cooperation at all levels.
The UAE and Italy share common goals, including achieving sustainable development and economic growth, strengthening cooperation with the international community, prosperity and stability, and the traditional values of peace, tolerance, human fraternity, coexistence, dialogue and openness.
This strategic partnership will allow the UAE and Italy to work together to broaden and deepen their vision of cooperation in areas of common strategic interest, including political, diplomatic, international, economic and trade cooperation, as well as cooperation in the areas of direct investment and Partnerships, including healthcare and sustainable development, food and water security, industrial and advanced technology cooperation, defense and climate change, renewable energy and clean technology, energy security and transition, education, culture, people-to-people exchange, sports and others important areas. “
