MONTREAL, 5th October, 2022 (WAM) — The United Arab Emirates, represented by the General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA), has been elected for the sixth consecutive time as the Council of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). The 36-member Council is the governing body of the Organization and serves a three-year term.
At the 41st ICAO Assembly Session in Montreal, Canada, from 27 September to 7 October, the UAE’s efforts in the field of international aviation successfully achieved results with 161 out of 175 eligible votes cast.
The election meeting was attended by Abdullah bin Touq Al Marri, Minister of Economy and Chairman of the GCAA Board of Directors, Mohammed Saif Al Suwaidi, Director General of the General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA), senior UAE civil aviation officials and member states representing 193 member organisations.
Abdullah bin Touq al Marri said the re-election of the UAE to the ICAO committee falls within the vision of the UAE leadership for the industry and affirms the confidence of the regional and international aviation industry in the UAE aviation sector and its outstanding status.
He added that the UAE’s victory also coincided with the UAE’s celebration of Aviation Day on October 5.
According to the GCAA, the aviation industry accounts for 15% of the UAE’s GDP, and this proportion is expected to grow steadily over the next few years.
