NEW YORK, 20th September, 2022 (WAM) — The United Arab Emirates has participated in a joint ministerial meeting between the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) and the People’s Republic of China.
The meeting took place on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly and discussions focused on pressing regional and international issues.
During the meeting, Minister of State Khalifa Shaheen Almaral highlighted the strength of the UAE’s relationship with China, the main trading partner of the Gulf Cooperation Council and the UAE’s largest trading partner. In 2021, the UAE’s non-oil trade with China will exceed $60 billion.
In his speech, Al Marar stressed that the UAE looks forward to “enhancing trade exchanges and cooperation in important areas such as energy, technology and culture, while enriching discussions on these issues during the GCC-China joint summit”.
He also praised China’s effective role in the Security Council and its contribution to maintaining international peace and security.
“We value the spirit of constructive cooperation and consensus between the two countries in various documents, especially on Arab issues, and we look forward to continuing this cooperation during the UAE’s tenure as a council member,” Al Marar said. In addition, he thanked China for condemning terrorist Houthi attacks on Abu Dhabi, the capital of the United Arab Emirates, and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. He also stressed that the UAE adheres to the one-China policy.
Al Marar highlighted the steps taken by the UAE and GCC countries to reduce tensions and promote peace in the region, stressing the importance of Iran taking practical steps to build confidence and constructively implement its international obligations. He also said that GCC countries need to participate in future multilateral discussions in this regard.
