ABU DHABI, 12th January, 2023 (WAM) — Suhail bin Mohammed Al Mazrouei, Minister of Energy and Infrastructure, said the UAE is ready to host a special and solutions-oriented version of the United Nations Conference of the Parties to Climate Change (COP28 ), due to the competence of its institutions and the high level of expertise of its citizens and residents.
Al Mazrouei added that COP28 will mark a milestone for the climate agenda as it will serve as a platform to present the results of the first global stocktake of the Paris Agreement.
He added, “We congratulate Dr Sultan bin Ahmed Al Jaber, Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology and UAE Special Envoy for Climate Change, on his appointment by President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan Chairman-elect of COP28. This is in recognition of his enormous contribution to the energy sector, especially clean energy. We wish him success in leading this landmark conference in a manner that lives up to the UAE’s reputation and trust him to support Extensive expertise and knowledge in domestic and global climate efforts, as well as driving coordinated international action, will help make this event a resounding success.”
Al Mazrouei also congratulated Shamma bint Suhail Faris Al Mazrui, Minister of State for Youth Affairs, for being selected as a COP28 Youth Climate Advocate, and Razan Khalifa Al Mubarak, President of the International Union for Conservation of Nature, for being selected as the COP28 UN Climate Change Senior Champion.
“Their appointments reflect our wise leadership’s vision to draw on diverse national experience to ensure COP28 fulfills its mission,” he said.
The Minister reiterated the readiness of the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure to fully support the mission of the UAE High Council for COP28 to organize a successful meeting.
Al Mazrouei explained that the UAE’s hosting of COP28 later this year builds on its record of promoting collective climate action and addressing the challenges facing sustainable development.
“President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan’s directive to host COP28 in Dubai Expo City underscores the venue’s unique proposition as a model for a sustainable future city that preserves the UAE’s environmental heritage,” he concluded road.
