Emirates Team Emirates question Fernando Gaviria’s ‘focus and drive’, sprinter to leave

[ad_1]

Fernando Gaviria The Colombian is set to leave the Emirates at the end of the season after the team refused to extend his contract.

Rumors of a move to Movistar have been swirling for weeks, but the sprinter’s level of commitment and motivation will be subject to question marks from the team’s top ranks after a disappointing three years with the team.

Team manager Joxean Fernández Matxin confirmed Willow News Gaviria will go ahead and explain that while a rider’s level of talent is undeniable, the application and hard work required at the sport’s highest level isn’t always there.

“We don’t have a follow-up. It’s not perfect, but Gaviria is a 12 out of 10 in my opinion. He’s a super, super talent. For me, he’s one of the best sprinters in the world. , but for me, the problem is that he only works at level five or six. He races at level 8, but a lot of drivers train super professionally at 9 or 10, 11 or 12,” Fernández Matxin Tell Willow News.

The 28-year-old Colombian joined Mauro Gianetti’s team in 2019 after a big season in 2018 that saw him win two stages in the Tour de France, wearing the Yellow jersey.

He won a stage in the Giro d’Italia the following year, but the sprinter hasn’t won a Tour title since. There have been three cases of COVID-19 over the past two and a half seasons, with few results to speak of.

Fernández Matxin has had the best years of the driver’s career so far with Gaviria at Quick-Step. He is considered one of the best sprinters around and spent three and a half years leading the way for Patrick Lefevre’s team.

However, in the past two years, he has only won one race, a stage of the Tour of Oman.

“Gaviria needs a change of mentality, a change of motivation to bring him to the level. I know him very well during my work with Quick-Step, I helped him achieve his contract in the UAE, but in my opinion he needs to change his mentality , attention and motivation to achieve new goals,” Fernandez Matsin said.

Jevin’s transfer rumours ‘no comment’

While one rider has left the Emirates Emirates stables, another may be on the way, with speculation Jay Vine could break his contract at Alpecin and jump into Tadej Pogačar’s team.

The Emirates have been busy in the transfer market, signing Adam Yates of Ineos Grenadiers, Tim Wellens of Lotto Soudal, Domen Novak of Victorious Bahrain and Felix Großschartner of Bora-Hansgrohe.

Vine, 26, made a breakthrough at the Vuelta a España, winning two stages in three days. When asked about the possibility of signing the Australian, Fernandez Matsing said:

“I cannot answer. At the moment, there is no contact with the team. I have a list of drivers for the next training camp and he is not on the list at this time.”

Willow News A wide-ranging interview with Fernández Matxin will follow later this week.
