So far, Emirati astronaut Sultan AlNeyadi has settled in his new home, more than 400 kilometers from Earth: the International Space Station (ISS).The last official update on AlNeyadi and his Crew-6 mates was issued by Nasa, which said Newcomers will receive a safety briefing and orientation At the orbital outpost, they’ll get some sleep afterwards.

One of Crew-6’s first public events was AlNeyadi’s call to Earth. The NASA website lists the flight activity on Tuesday between His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, UAE Vice President and Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, and flight engineer Al Neiyadi. The interaction is scheduled for March 7 at 4.50pm (UAE time).

During the Earth to Space Dialogue, Sheikh Mohammed assured AlMansoori that although the latter was the first Emirati to venture into space, “a generation of young citizens will follow in your footsteps as space scientists and technology pioneers”.

AlNeyadi’s six-month sojourn on the International Space Station – the longest space mission in Arab history – was a fulfillment of that pledge.

Crew-6 is part of Expedition 68/69 to the International Space Station. “Expedition” refers to crews who occupy a space station and use it for research and testing. They are numbered sequentially, starting with one and increasing with each subsequent expedition.

During the six months that AlNeyadi will spend on the International Space Station, the two Dubai-based entities will produce a weekly radio program featuring interviews, fascinating facts, competitions, events and an opportunity for all students in the UAE to ask questions of the astronaut. The Mohammed bin Rashid Space Center (MBRSC) aims to reach 20,000 students and children through the programme, “which will be a milestone in interactive education, bringing to life the groundbreaking and exciting work of the UAE’s space missions” .

Expedition 68/69 may also continue to install the last part of iROSA, the solar array launched on the International Space Station.

MBRSC is funding two research projects at the Mohammed bin Rashid University of Medicine and Health Sciences (MBRU). The first project will assess how the microgravity environment of spaceflight affects heart-posture interactions, while the second project will study dental/oral cells in a simulated microgravity environment on Earth.

“These programs will engage students and researchers, fostering the development and qualification of future generations of scientists,” the center said.
