Enec Announces Successful Start-up of Unit 3 at Barkah Plant

[ad_1]

The Emirates Nuclear Energy Company (Enec) announced today (September 22) that its operations and maintenance arm, Nawah, has successfully started up Unit 3 of the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant in the Al Dhafra area of Abu Dhabi.

Nawah, a joint venture between Enec and Korea Electric Power Corporation (Kepco), has been safely passing an integrated testing program before successfully completing the start-up of the third nuclear power reactor at the Barakah plant.

The milestone represents Enec’s significant progress in bringing online four units of the Arab region’s first multi-unit operating nuclear power plant and accelerating the decarbonization of the UAE’s power sector to net zero emissions by 2050.

Enec said Unit 3 started up a year after Unit 2 started up, and the next key milestone is the connection of Unit 3 to the national grid in the coming weeks.

Once in commercial operation, Unit 3 will add an additional 1,400 MW of zero-carbon emission electricity capacity to the national grid, which will significantly contribute to the UAE’s energy security and take an important step in the fight against climate change.

It added that the clean electricity generated by Barakah is providing sustainable electricity to households, businesses and high-tech industries in the UAE, and the successful development of the plant demonstrates the country’s extensive large-scale project management capabilities.

Mohamed Ibrahim Al Hammadi, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Enec, said: “We reached another important milestone today in delivering the UAE’s peaceful nuclear energy program as we deliver strategically clean energy to the UAE.”

“The Barakah Power Plant is leading the way in decarbonising the power sector, sustainably generating sufficient power to meet growing demand and power growth. The UAE has developed a world-class nuclear program that is experience-based and continuously Sharing lessons learned with global counterparts makes Barakah a case study for the delivery of new nuclear projects in the world,” he said.

Commenting on the milestone, Nawah CEO Engineer Ali Al Hammadi said: “The start-up of Unit 3 clearly demonstrates that our Emirati talent, working closely with international experts and organizations, has developed the expertise and capabilities to operate safely and securely simultaneously. Three nuclear units.”

“We look forward to the imminent connection of Unit 3 to the national grid as we strive to meet up to 25% of the UAE’s electricity needs,” Al Hammadi said.

He added that over the next few weeks, Unit 3 will be connected to the national grid and the operations team will continue the process of gradually increasing power levels, known as the power ramp-up test (PAT).-TradeArabia News Service
