Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation (ENEC) through its subsidiary Nawah Energy Company start unit three UAE 5.6GW Barakah Nuclear Power Plant.
Over the next few weeks, the 1.4GW unit will be connected to the UAE’s national grid before starting commercial operations.
Earlier this year, Nawah received a 60-year operating license for Unit 3 of the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant from the UAE’s independent nuclear regulator, the Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation (FANR).
The Barakah power plant is located in the Al Dhafra area of ​​Abu Dhabi and consists of four units, each with a capacity of 1.4GW.
The first two units of the plant are currently in commercial operation, while four units are in the final stages of commissioning.
Mohamed Ibrahim Al Hammadi, Managing Director and CEO of ENEC, said: “As we continue to provide the UAE with strategically important clean energy, we today reached another important milestone in delivering the UAE’s peaceful nuclear energy programme.
“The Barakah Plant is leading the decarbonization of the power industry, sustainably generating abundant electricity to meet growing demand and power growth.”
Ali Al Hammadi, CEO of Nawah, said: “Today is another important moment for the Barakah power plant, where we are already increasing the power of the reactor, generating more heat and preparing to deliver the first megawatt of clean electricity to the grid, in accordance with national regulations and international standard.
“We look forward to the upcoming connection of Unit 3 to the national grid as we work to meet 25% of the UAE’s electricity needs.”
Nawah Energy said it had undertaken a “comprehensive” test programme before starting the third reactor at the Barakah plant.
The company is a joint venture between ENEC and Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO).
