Abu Dhabi’s First Community-Driven Hospice Set to Enhance Palliative Care in the UAE

Abu Dhabi-based Burjeel Holdings and London’s St Christopher’s Hospice have collaboratively initiated a groundbreaking project to establish the UAE’s premier hospice palliative care center. The venture aims to redefine compassionate community engagement, offering support to terminally ill patients and their families.

Connecting Communities for Compassion: Palliative Care

Dr. Neil Arun Nijhawan, Consultant Hospice and Palliative Medicine, envisions the hospice as a focal point for a compassionate community in the UAE. This innovative approach involves harnessing the social capital within communities, connecting individuals who have navigated similar experiences with those currently in need. The compassionate community will fill gaps in healthcare and social services, providing a supportive network for patients and their families.

Holistic Palliative Care Services

The upcoming hospice facility, anticipated to be located at Burjeel Medical City or a new dedicated site, will serve as a center of excellence in palliative care. With a focus on addressing physical, emotional, and psychological needs, the hospice will be equipped with state-of-the-art medical technology. The compassionate community concept aims to complement existing services and create a connected support network for patients across the UAE.

Strategic Collaboration for Lasting Impact: Palliative Care

The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between Burjeel Holdings and St Christopher’s Hospice signifies a strategic collaboration to enhance palliative care services in the UAE. The partnership, attended by Sheikh Ahmed bin Hamdan bin Mohammed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE Sailing and Rowing Federation, is poised to bring about positive, enduring changes in healthcare.

Commitment to Community Well-being

Leadership from both organizations, including Omran Al Khoori from Burjeel Holdings and Dr. Heather Richardson from St Christopher’s Hospice, expressed their commitment to providing the highest quality healthcare services. The collaboration reflects a dedication to community well-being and is expected to have a lasting impact on individuals and families facing life-limiting illnesses in the UAE.
