Experts say creativity, entrepreneurship and business projects are rapidly replacing old favorites – such as engineering and medicine – as the careers of choice for students.

on the second day Khaleej Times’ UniExpo Many universities are bringing out the best in their entrepreneurship, design and creativity courses, which they believe are the most popular today and will be in the future.

The Marangoni Academy of Fashion and Design in Italy is one of the top universities at the Expo, offering study options in the fields of creativity, design and entrepreneurship.

“We offer short-term and degree programs,” said Owais Majid, manager of admissions and admissions at Marangoni College. “Short courses give students the skills to design products and prepare them for a place in the design and creative industries,” he added.

The School of Design also offers a five-month Fashion Entrepreneurship Program, where students learn skills and ideas that will help them move the global fashion industry forward through design innovation and new business models. “However, the core theme of all courses is entrepreneurship,” Majid said.

Majid said the creative industries in the UAE are on an upward trajectory. “In 2020 alone, the industry helped create 100,000 jobs in the UAE, and current statistics show that the creative industries contribute 4 percent to the UAE’s GDP,” Majid said.

Daniel Adkins, chief executive of Curtin University’s managed services provider Transnational Academic Group, said there had been a surge in student interest in entrepreneurship and business courses compared to a few years ago. This university, which offers courses in engineering, business and the humanities, also offers skill sets and prepares students to start their own companies. “Dubai is the Middle East’s hub for entrepreneurship, innovation and business. Demand for entrepreneurship-related courses has risen dramatically,” Adkins said.

Today’s students are more inclined towards creative and business courses, and parental preferences are clearly shifting from engineering and medicine to business and entrepreneurship, Adkins said. “Young people have come to understand that as entrepreneurs, they don’t have to depend on others. For now, the mindset of parents is very in sync with their children, and we can expect more shifts in the near future,” Adkins said .

Academics and learning have also changed dramatically before and after the pandemic, he said. “The whole field of education has changed, with students having off-campus courses and blended learning.”

Adkins added that we have six campuses around the world and our students can study specific courses at universities anywhere in the world.

virtual learning

There is no age limit to study, and Westford University College offers students of all ages a range of specialisations, from foundation programmes to doctoral programmes. The college works with universities in the UK, Scotland and Spain, and many students learn virtually through live interactive courses. “Our students cover more than 125 countries and have recorded interactive live sessions. If a topic is missed, students can always learn from the recordings,” said Goret Fernandez, admissions manager at Westford University College.

“Most of the students here are professionals who don’t have the time. Virtual learning is the best option for them because employers look for specific majors in their employees,” Fernandez added,

Fernandez, who has been in the industry for more than 12 years, said the education system was slowly shifting, with programs of study based on student requirements and the needs of the job market. “The industry requirements are also getting higher and the system is getting better and better, and there are great opportunities for students to specialize in different fields. In previous years, they only had a few courses.

In information technology, for example, “students can now choose from computer science, cybersecurity, cyber engineering, and more,” Fernandez said.
