The United Arab Emirates’ two global airlines, Etihad Airways and Emirates, will start connecting flights this summer to facilitate more tourists to the UAE.
Under the memorandum of understanding, customers of each airline will be able to buy a ticket to either Dubai or Abu Dhabi and return from the other airport. Emirates has a hub in Dubai and Etihad has a hub in Abu Dhabi.
Flyers can also return to a city different from the departure city on any airline. Dubai and Abu Dhabi are approximately 80 miles apart.
The airline said the arrangement “aims to capitalize on the opportunity to boost tourism from key source markets to the UAE by allowing travelers to experience multiple destinations on a single itinerary.”
At an initial stage, the interline partnership will focus on attracting tourists from Europe and China to the UAE, the two airlines said. Interline is not immediately activated for US travelers.
A specific launch date for the interline has not yet been announced.
Emirates Airline President Tim Clark said that a deeper partnership between Emirates and Etihad Airways is on the horizon.
“We believe this new agreement provides a solid foundation for further growth opportunities between the two airlines and is an example of our commitment to our vision of continued diversification of the UAE’s economy,” he said.
