Etihad Rail, the developer and operator of the UAE’s national rail network, participated in the 17th edition of the Middle East Rail Show, the region’s largest transport event, in Abu Dhabi today (17 May) and signed seven main agreement.
The event, hosted by Etihad Rail for the second consecutive year, under the patronage of Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, Vice President, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Presidential Affairs of the UAE , organized in cooperation with the Ministry of Energy and the Ministry of Infrastructure, Culture and Tourism and the GCC Railway Authority.
The exhibition and conference welcomed more than 10,000 attendees, including eight ministers from Europe, the UK, North Africa and the GCC, 300 exhibitors and 600 VIPs representing 30 countries.
Regarding the strategic deals, Etihad Rail said the deals were primarily aimed at boosting rail freight and passenger services.
The first agreement signed was to establish a joint venture with DHL Global Forwarding –
A division of Deutsche Post DHL, providing air and ocean freight forwarding services.
The deal with the German group undertaking major logistics projects under the DHL Industrial brand is primarily aimed at strengthening Etihad Rail’s sustainable freight services in the UAE.
A memorandum of understanding was signed with Italian luxury hotel company Arsenale, in addition to agreements with integrated logistics provider MICCO and part of AD Ports Group and Uber.
Other big deals signed at the event included Morocco’s national railway operator ONCF and drone delivery specialist SkyGo; and an agreement with Fujairah Natural Resources Corporation (FNRC), an independent government entity, Designed to oversee and control mining facilities in Fujairah that specialize in the extraction of natural resources.
Etihad Rail was also heavily involved as part of the conference agenda, with Etihad Rail CEO Shadi Malak delivering a keynote address at the opening of the event.
“We are proud to once again host the Middle East Railway, in line with the vision of the UAE leadership, their recognition of the significant advantages of railways and the importance of relying on trains for freight and passenger transport,” the statement said.
He added: “This year’s event is the largest on record and we are delighted to build on our commitment to partnerships to engage with leading entities in the global rail sector.”
Commenting on the agreements, Malak said: “These are a testament to Etihad Rail’s continuous efforts to find partners to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of the UAE’s national rail network, as we strive to develop a nationwide network that meets the needs of the UAE for the benefit of customers and passengers across the country from all walks of life.”
“The joint venture with DHL Global Forwarding strengthens the reputation of Middle East Railways, with Etihad Rail as its sponsor, as a platform for business partnerships with global companies for the benefit of the UAE. This partnership will strengthen our presence in the Middle East sustainable freight services in the UAE, and further drive economic growth in the country,” he said.
“We will be working with ONCF, the operator of one of the continent’s oldest railways, to share knowledge and learn best practices as we develop the network,” he added.
Regarding the MICCO deal, Malak said it has a strong track record in the UAE and the agreement will establish intermodal freight solutions.
“As a result, our clients will be able to use their time and resources more efficiently, allowing them to focus on their core business objectives,” he added.-TradeArabia News Service
