Executive Vice President Timmermans and Commissioner Simson in Abu Dhabi for IRENA General Assembly and COP28 preparations

On 14-15 January, European Green Deal Executive Vice-Chair Frans Timmermans and Energy Commissioner Kadri Simson will represent the Commission at the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) Congress in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates (UAE).

On Saturday, Executive Vice President Timmermans will deliver a statement at the IRENA High-Level Plenary Meeting: “The World’s Energy Transition – A Global Stocktake”. He will then communicate with the IRENA Youth Forum. On Sunday, Commissioner Simson will attend a Ministerial Dialogue on ‘Regional Energy Transition Perspectives: Energy Transition in South East Asia’. She will then deliver a keynote address at the Ministerial Dialogue on “Key Materials for the Energy Transition Centered on Renewables: How to Harness Opportunities Together”. In the evening, Commissioner Simson will take part in the launch of the Empowering Lives and Livelihoods initiative.She will also participate in the Atlantic Council Global Energy Forum, participate in fireside chat With Richard Morningstar Ambassador.

Executive Vice President Timmermans will also begin preparations for the 2023 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP28), hosted by the UAE. He will hold a bilateral meeting on Saturday with Dr Sultan Al Jaber, the new President-designate of COP28, and Siaosi Sovaleni, Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Tonga. On Sunday, he will meet John Kerry, US Presidential Special Envoy for Climate; Spain’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenges, Teresa Ribera; India’s Minister of Power, New and Renewable Energy Raj Kumar Singh; Maldives Khadeeja Naseem, Minister of State for Environment, Climate Change and Technology; and Arifin Tasrif, Indonesian Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources.

On Monday, Executive Vice President Timmermans will attend the opening ceremony Abu Dhabi Sustainability WeekHe will then hold bilateral talks with Francesco La Camera, Director General of IRENA; Reem Al Hashimy, UAE Minister of State for International Cooperation; Simon Steele, Executive Secretary of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change; and Damilola Ogunbiyi, CEO of SEforALL.The EVP’s itinerary will also include a visit to Jubail Mangrove Park.
