Bailey joins Fantasia Barrino, Taraji P. Henson and Colman Domingo in a new trailer for the movie musical “The Color Purple,” which is coming out this Christmas.
Based on Alice Walker’s 1982 Pulitzer Prize-winning work novel, “The Color Purple” tells the story of sisters Celie and Nettie growing up in rural Georgia in the early 1900’s. The pair were brutally forcibly separated as teenagers after a series of disturbing events.
Celie, who thought her older sister was dead, documents her daily struggles – including an abusive father, teenage pregnancy and an unstable marriage – in a series of poignant letters to God.
Barrino plays the grown-up Celie, a character she plays Get unanimous praise In the stage version of the 2007 musical. Phylicia Pearl Mpasi portrays a younger version of the character. Bailey and Ciara play the younger and older versions of Nettie, respectively.

The Color Purple was first adapted for the big screen by Steven Spielberg in 1985, starring Whoopi Goldberg as Siri.
Oprah Winfrey, who played a supporting role in the original film, was a co-producer on the musical adaptation when it premiered opened on Broadway in 2005.Ten years later, she co-produced the show for the second time on Broadway tony winning revivalstarring Cynthia Erivo.
in the interview and Entertainment Weekly Last month, Barrino said she almost turned down the chance to play Celie on the big screen because of the importance of the role. She went on to credit her co-star and director Blitz Bazawule for helping “up my game.”
“I had to pull out some things that I had buried, but I felt safe doing that because my director and actors surrounded me and I was able to get back to that place,” she explained. “I’m Celie.”
Winfrey echoed those sentiments, calling the latest installment of “The Color Purple” a “joyful revival, a revival of hope.”
