When Fantasia got a once-in-a-lifetime call on Thursday night, she was ecstatic! Ms. Barrino will join the upcoming remake of “The Color Purple” as “Celi.” She expressed her gratitude in an Instagram post.
“As I sit down tonight to reflect on my life journey, I believe I now understand what redemption really feels like,” she wrote. “The last time I stepped into the role, the parallels between what I was portraying on stage and what I experienced in my own reality were too close to comfort.”
Fantasia expresses how she has changed over the years and how excited she is to apply this growth to her character.
“Since then, I’ve learned that my pain was just an introduction to the larger purpose of meaning and distribution. I hope that every little Black girl who struggles to be heard and recognized also promises to never give up at all costs.”
Fantasia, who played Celie in the 2007 Broadway remake, has previously described how laborious the role is.
“If you really put yourself in her shoes, it’s tiring,” she told Playbill.com. “It takes a lot of your energy. I know I’m exhausted when I walk off the stage from the show at night. I run to my room and I collapse on the couch and I have to take at least ten minutes to relax and put My thoughts are focused and come out of Celie’s role.”
