Love yourself and have attitude no matter what you wear, is nine-year-old Vidhi Karva’s advice to fashionistas.
Vidhi, a Year 4 student from Indus International School in Pune, India, presented her evening fashion collection at the recent Dubai World Fashion Week, which ended on 17-18 December.
Her clothing line is part of an international kids/teen fashion show.
The event was organized by the Vivz Fashion School, where she was introduced as “the youngest fashion designer in the world”.
Vidi said she became interested in fashion a few years ago when she started watching her mother wear designer clothes.
“I would convince her to let me style her the way I wanted,” she says.
“That’s when I realized I wanted to be a designer,” she adds.
With the help of her mother, she sketched the lines and rolled them out at the event. “Being a designer is my dream, and now I can imagine the designs and my mother helps shape them on paper.”
This is her second visit to Dubai, but she is delighted to make her debut as a designer at the fashion hub of the Middle East.
“It was a big turning point for me and I’ve had great feedback. Now, I’m going to start working on my next collection and am excited to bring the line to London and Milan,” she said.
As for her future designs, she hopes to focus on sustainable clothing while promoting Indian fabrics.
She thanked Vivz Fashion Academy mentors Vivek Pawar and Arti Rai. “I’ve always dreamed of being a part of their show, so I’m excited to start my journey with them,” she added.
Three of her favorite style icons include pop star Hannah Montana, actors Jennifer Aniston and Sonam Kapoor. Icons she likes to dress up include the two actors and Priyanka Chopra-Jonas. While she hasn’t had any formal fashion studies, as of now, she plans to learn the craft professionally. “I would sign up for a course, but everything I’ve learned so far has been through YouTube,” she adds.
