Fast-Track the UAE Border Immigration Process When Traveling by Car

Dubai: Travelers using cars to enter and exit the UAE can now expedite their immigration process with the ‘Smart Land Borders Crossing’ system introduced by the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs, and Port Security (ICP). This new technology was showcased at Gitex 2023, held at the Dubai World Trade Centre from October 16 to October 20.

Seamless Border Entry

Amera Al Khouri, Head of the Services Leadership Section at ICP, explained that the ‘Smart Land Borders Crossing’ system has been implemented at Al Ghuwaifat Port in Abu Dhabi. This innovative system allows travelers to remain in their vehicles, offering a seamless and efficient border crossing process. To use this feature, your vehicle must be registered under your name, and ICP should have your Emirates ID and passport information in their system.

The Verification Process: Immigration

When entering the Al Ghuwaifat border, travelers need to go through the ‘smart passport’ lane at the immigration checkpoint. This is where the process begins. Your license plate will be scanned, and the information will be sent to an operating room for verification. Following this, a machine will perform a biometric scan of your face or iris. If your biometrics are registered in the system, you will then need to scan your Emirates ID or passport using the machine reader, which is designed to adjust to your eye level.

Verified Drivers: Immigration

If the biometrics match the travel documents, you are considered a ‘verified driver.’ In such cases, you will receive a green light to exit the border crossing point. This quick and hassle-free process streamlines the border crossing experience for registered and verified drivers.

For First-Time Visitors: Immigration

If you are driving a car registered under a different individual, or the license plate is not recognized by the control room, or if you are a first-time visitor, there may be an error in the matching process. In such cases, the gates will not open for you, and you will need to proceed to the standard lane to register your details in the system. However, once you have registered, you can take advantage of the ‘smart passport’ lane for future border crossings.

The ‘Smart Land Borders Crossing’ system offers a modern and efficient solution for those traveling to and from the UAE by car, enhancing border security and improving the overall border crossing experience for verified drivers.
