First case of monkeypox found in United Arab Emirates

The government said nothing about the patient, but stressed that authorities were investigating her contacts and “taking all necessary measures” to limit the spread of monkeypox.

The statement did not say where the case was found in the federation of seven emirates, including the capital Abu Dhabi and tourist center Dubai.

Authorities in the repressive country have similarly refused to provide the geographic distribution of COVID-19 cases throughout the coronavirus pandemic.

Cases of smallpox-related disease have previously only been identified in populations with links to Central and West Africa. The virus, which originated in primates and other wild animals, causes fever, body aches, chills and fatigue in most patients. People with severe disease may develop rashes and lesions on the face, hands, and other parts of the body.
