Today, in a historic shift in the retail landscape in the UAE capital, Astra Tech, the most important consumer technology group in the MENA region, opened its B Store at the Sky Tower on Ream Island, Abu Dhabi.
This novel convenience store adopts FacePay, integrates advanced artificial intelligence technology and cloud system, and provides a completely autonomous shopping experience. Shoppers can buy groceries such as juice, coffee, bread, condiments and snacks and pay with just a swipe of their face.
Astra Tech eCommerce Director Valeriya Thores said the journey gave customers a taste of the future of retail. “B Store represents the future of retail,” she said.
“This innovative fusion of facial recognition technology revolutionizes the traditional way of shopping, providing unparalleled convenience and security. At B Store, your face is your wallet. We are committed to simplifying the daily activities of our customers, which is A major step in that direction,” she added.
An Astra Tech spokesperson told Khaleej Times that upon approaching the entrance gate, customers are presented with a screen displaying a ‘tap or scan to enter’ message and given the option to pay by tapping their bank card or FacePay using the card reader. If using FacePay, customers will need to download an app to sign up.
“For card payments, customers simply swipe their card at the POS, and for FacePay, they simply move to the FacePay machine and simply check. Once the payment method of choice is confirmed, the door opens allowing them to enter the store .”
“After entering the store, sensors will detect which items the customer has picked up and pay for those items when they leave,” the spokesperson added.
The store is one of the latest AI-powered shopping experiences currently available in the UAE. In September 2021, the Carrefour City+ convenience store in Dubai was inaugurated by Omar bin Sultan Al Olama, Minister of State for Artificial Intelligence.
The store utilizes artificial intelligence technology to provide a seamless, contactless shopping experience. Once inside, items picked up by customers are automatically added to the digital basket, allowing the purchase to be completed without any employee interaction.
The store carries more than 1,300 items, including snacks, beverages, packaged foods, food to go, and basic necessities.
