TSR politics: Florida Governor Ron DeSantis signed an executive order today prohibiting local school districts from requiring students to wear masks before the fall semester.
The DeSantis order was issued a few days after the Federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued new guidelines recommending that all students, teachers, and staff in K-12 schools wear face masks in the fall. New York Post.
According to the Orlando Sentinel, DeSantis said at an unrelated press conference: “If you listen to something circulating around the CDC, someone will try to impose more restrictions on the American people.” “I just want to say. School boards that do not comply with the DeSantis order may be withheld state funds.
DeSantis cited the Sunshine State’s Parental Rights Act in his executive order and added in a statement: “It is prudent to protect the ability of parents to make decisions about their children wearing masks.”
The Florida Educational Association opposed the order.
“We reject this idea. Instead, we ask Gov. DeSantis to allow all Florida’s citizens to have a voice by empowering the elected leaders of cities, counties and school districts to make health and safety decisions locally based on their unique needs and circumstances, FEA President Andrew Spar said in a statement.
According to the Sentinel, the number of COVID-19 cases in Florida has recently climbed, with 17,589 new cases on Wednesday, the highest level since January.
According to the state’s COVID-19 report, a total of 61% of Florida residents have been vaccinated.
