television: Kenya’s “wife”

Little Rock actor and producer HG Wells screened his Kenyan TV series, “Wives” Wednesdays at 6:30 pm at the Ron Robinson Theater, 100 Market Drive, Little Rock River. Titled “Africa Comes to Little Rock,” the event will also include a special presentation on Kenya by Sandy S. McMath, a Little Rock attorney and author of “Africa Alone.” The host is Essence Simone, a University of Arkansas Little Rock alumnus. Kenyan-American actor Benjamin Onyango, who appeared on the show, described the idea he proposed to Wells as “a traditional African who married five wives and brought back a sixth and final wife. The Drama and Dilemma of Men”. Episodes of the show will be broadcast on Kenya’s largest television network, Kenya Broadcasting Corporation, for one year, starting in May 2019. The second season is in preparation.

Movie: “Dollhouse” director

filmmaker todd solonzResidency at the University of Central Arkansas today with a screening of his 1995 feature film “Welcome to the Dollhouse” at the University’s Reynolds Performance Hall at 201 Donaga Avenue, Conway at 6:30 pm. UCA faculty Keith Corson and Emily Railsback will host a post-screening Q&A with Solondz. Admission is free and open to the public.

Solonz currently teaches film writing and directing at NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts.

Art: ‘Catalyst’ grant

The Central American Art Alliance will adopt its new Promote the initiative. The money will come from the Little Rock Wind Gate Foundation. The Arkansas Arts Council is a member of the alliance. Twenty-five grants each in 2023 and 2024 will combine funding, mentoring and management, allowing artists to choose how best to use funding to support their creative practice, including equipment, travel, studio space and childcare.

The grant requires Catalyst Fellows to attend a professional development meeting in June, where they will work with small peer groups and artist facilitators to develop a strategic plan for how best to use grant funds, and provide a pair over the next year A tutoring course.

Apply between January 9 and February 24.Grants are available to artists of all creative disciplines residing in Cleburne, Conway, Faulkner, Garland, Grant, Hot Spring, Jefferson, Lonoke, Perry, Pope, Prairie, Pulaski, Saline, Van in Bren, White and Yere counties; Criteria and application form are in maaa.org/professional-development/catalyze.

The Arkansas Museum of Fine Arts is expanding Volunteer Explaining Program Get ready for the grand opening on April 22nd. Docents will welcome the community to tour the museum’s art and architecture through tours and discussions with K-12 school groups and adult visitors. The collaborative training program lasts 10 weeks; the instructor requires a one-year commitment.
