Abdul Malak was answering questions about France’s recent overhaul of media window rules and whether they should be updated again amid pressure from US studios and global platforms, notably Disney and Netflix.
On the current chronology, most global platforms, including Disney and Amazon, have a 17-month gap between feature film theatrical and online releases, while Netflix There is a 15-month window in exchange for additional investment in local feature films. There is a 36-month window before the new rules are introduced.
“Yes, I think the overall chronology should be shorter, but we need to go step by step and find consistency between all the parts [of the film and TV industry] Worrying,” Abdul Malak said.

The new media chronology legislation launched in February 2022 will last for three years. However, it contains a provision for an annual review scheduled for February 2023.
“We decided to open up discussions to change it again faster than originally planned. A ministerial adviser has revealed that a reduction in the TVOD window is being discussed and it is “very likely” that an agreement will be reached by June.
Adbul Malak was in Cannes this year to talk about the launch of France’s $350 million “Grand Fabrique de L’Image” capacity-building program, which supports the remodeling or creation of 11 studio projects, 12 animation studios, 6 video game studios and 5 special effects and post-production institutions and 34 training institutions across the country.

“There is confusion between the different subjects. So, if you are against pension reform, then you start to be against everything the government does without distinguishing between the subjects,” she said.
“This reform will help us to fund our social model and all public services, including education, health, culture and more,” she continued. “If you look at people’s retirement age in other countries, in France we’re still 62. And we’re not going to 67 or 65 like other countries.”
Abdul Malak pointed to the current lack of “common collective consciousness” in France, a trend she said preceded the debate on pension reform during the Covid-19 pandemic.
“In times of crisis, you feel like every category wants to defend its own interests,” she said
She suggested that trade unions should now be more concerned with the rise of a global far-right movement.
“If we go back to how Cannes was born during the fascist period. We’re at a moment now where the far right is on the rise in Europe, it’s very high in France, it’s the same in the US,” she said.
“I hope unions and all their friends join us in fighting the far right,” she said. “I think our common enemy should be the far right, and we shouldn’t say no to far right ideology by threatening festivals by cutting off the electricity or destroying our culture.”
