Doctors in the UAE have stressed that it is important for people using e-scooters to take proper precautions in hot weather to avoid sunburn and dehydration.

Electric scooters have become an increasingly popular form of transportation, especially in summer, as they allow you to enjoy a comfortable ride in the open air.

In order to cope with the high temperature in daily commuting, more and more people choose it as a practical transportation solution, especially for short trips.

Dr Vishnu Chaitanya Swaroopa Sura, a specialist in internal medicine at Medeor Hospital in Dubai, said: “Using a helmet and polarized cycling glasses with UV protection to reflect the sun can reduce the risk of accidents. I recommend people use a sunscreen with at least SPF 30 or preferably SPF 50 plus to protect yourself from UV rays. The most important thing is to keep yourself well hydrated by drinking fluids or liquids every 15 to 30 minutes. It is also recommended to take fluids with electrolytes to stay hydrated and maintain electrolytes and muscle contraction. Another The important thing is to wear loose, light-colored clothing made of breathable fabrics like cotton.”

While electric scooters are a new, innovative and rapidly growing form of transportation, doctors believe it’s important to take regular breaks to cool off in the shade as temperatures soar.

Staying hydrated is equally important, as humans constantly lose water through the skin and through sweat, especially when exposed to outdoor temperatures.

Dr Neena Rasil, Family Medicine Specialist, Mankhool Aster Hospital, said: “As temperatures soar in the UAE, e-scooter riders are advised to take safety precautions when riding in the sun to avoid sunburn or dehydration. Firstly, riders must wear protective gear – ventilation Good helmets and other gear to protect them from any accidents. Secondly, if possible, riders must choose to ride along shaded routes. Otherwise, they must try to avoid 11am-4pm when the temperature is particularly high Ride in the sun during rush hour.”

“When riding, stick to designated scooter tracks and keep a safe distance to avoid sudden stops. Always wear proper safety gear such as a helmet, elbow and knee pads. If you must go outside (peak hours), wear a wide-brimmed hat , Try to block out the sun. Cover your skin with long sleeves and long pants to prevent sunburn, dryness, wrinkling and skin cancer. Apply sunscreen to all exposed areas, including ears, nose and lips, but keep it out of your mouth,” Asserts Dr. Shireen Farouk, Consultant, Burjeel Medical Center, Al Shamkha Family Medicine.

Meanwhile, Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has launched an integrated monitoring platform that integrates bicycles, e-scooters and other non-motorized transport under its Enterprise Command and Control Center (EC3).

Using AI (artificial intelligence) technology, the program will not only help commuters have a smoother journey, but will also improve traffic safety for pedestrians and cyclists crossing the road

However, there are some rider safety guidelines that e-scooter users must keep in mind, which is also a personal responsibility. If you own an electric scooter, here are some things to keep in mind about this growing trend:

  1. Riders must be 16 years of age or older: Use of e-scooters is restricted to individuals 16 years of age or older.
  2. Wear protective gear and suitable clothing: Riders must wear protective helmets and suitable equipment, including knee pads and reflective clothing. Please use strong headlights when riding at night.
