Gaughan wins Emirates UAE PGA Championship at Jumeirah Golf Estates

DUBAI: Louis Gaughan (Dubai Hills Golf Club) shot a second-round 68 for a 36-hole total of 139 to win the 2023 Emirates PGA Championship at the Jumeirah Golf Estate in Dubai.

Gaughan, 29, shot a first-round 71-under 71 at the Fire Course yesterday (Monday), two strokes behind first-round leader Jackson Bell (Jumeirah Golf Estates).

Gowan shot the sixth par of the second round at the Earth Course, with a 513-yard eagle on the seventh hole and birdies on the ninth and 10th holes.

Another birdie on the 13th hole followed by a six par sent him home for a 34 with two nines to beat Graham Forbes (CH3 Performance Institute) by one shot.

He has been with Dubai Hills Golf Club for six months and before that he was with Jumeirah Golf Estate for 2.5 years.

Gowan said at the end of his round, “I hit the ball very well and gave myself a lot of birdie chances, especially today. Position in the tournament. I knew I was up a few holes to play, the last two holes. Graham birdied the end.”

The day’s best score was Forbes, who shot a second-round 68 with six birdies, four on the front nine and two on the back nine, for a first-round 72 .

Gaughan from Scotland won the Paul Lawrie Par 3 Championship a few years ago as well as some Scottish PGA events.

After winning the Emirates PGA Championship, Gaughan has an invitation from the Emirates Golf Federation (EGF) to play the $300,000 Abu Dhabi Challenge at the Abu Dhabi Golf Club next week on April 27 From Thursday 1st to Sunday 30th, the venue is the National Stadium.

Speaking about the Challenge Tour invitation, he said: “It was never really the goal, nor was it in my mind. I’m looking forward to next week, to see if my boss will give me a little time for at least one round of practice. I Always try to play once or twice a week during the season. I will definitely practice a little more before next Thursday. I have played a couple of Emirates UAE PGA events at the National Course at Abu Dhabi Golf Club. I just saw the event It was a pleasure to meet some of my friends who also competed, including Stephen Gallacher from Bathgate Golf Club, the same golf club I grew up at.”

Stephen Wilson, Golf Operations Manager at Jumeirah Golf Estates, concluded his presentation: “Thank you Emirates UAE PGA for inviting Jumeirah Golf Estates to host this prestigious event on the UAE golf calendar. Both of our golf courses are in excellent condition. Challenging but fair setup, today’s course is 7,127 yards with a mix of green and blue tees. We congratulate Louis and all the leading players on a great golf game.”
