Nico Denz wins stage 12 of 2023 Giro d'Italia

Niko Denz of BORA-Hansgrohe team Won Stage 12 of the 2023 Giro d’Italia, winning a separate 3-man sprint. The general classification was unchanged as all major maglia rosa contenders finished safely.

The 185km stage from Bra to Rivoli runs entirely on Piedmontese soil. It’s a bit of a “shoulders shrug” to climb to the top of Pedaggera at km 36 and the summit of Colle Braida just 30 km from the finish. It’s not really a race for sprinters or GC competitors, so it favors breakaway riders.

peloton, Now Alessandro Covi (Team Emirates) was the latest driver to abandon the race as 139 drivers started their race day at 12.47pm.

Their gap in peloton was 2.50 inches when it came down to Alba .

The next 75km was mostly flat. The rose group didn’t seem to care too much about the director.

With 78km to go, the leading convoy fell to Nico Denz, Alessandro Tonelli, Sebastian Berwick and Toms Skujins, 4 minutes and 50 seconds behind the pack. A group of 25 or 26 Chasers sit down a little over 2 minutes after the break.

With 62 kilometers left, the quartet leads by almost 8 minutes.

With 54 kilometers left, the leader crosses the finish line for the first time. From here they will climb to Colle Braida before returning to Rivoli for the real finish.

After 35 kilometers, the four leaders still sat above the maglia rosa group for more than 8 minutes. But the group with the chase was getting closer. The trio of Alex Baudin (ACT), Christian Scaroni (AST) and Alberto Bettiol (EFE) were just 3 minutes behind, with another 2:20 behind.

Marco Frigo attacked one of the chasing groups, trying to bridge the lead, but 3 minutes was a long gap to close on the climb. With 25 kilometers to go, the leading trio still leads by 8 minutes. The downhill section from Colle Braida back to Rivoli is a mix of old and new and may slow down the peloton further. Tonelli lost contact with the breakthrough after Skujins accelerated earlier.

With 12 kilometers to go, Denz continued his attack. Skujins are able to reconnect. Berwick looked knocked out, but it took a huge effort to get back on his feet.

With 2 kilometers left, the three were still trying to sprint each other. It all worked out, but Denz and Skuggins had the skills to contend with it. Danz came out on top.

Seconds after the race, stage winner Nico Denz said: “This is really important to me. I’m super proud. I shouldn’t be on the break. It’s up to Patrick Konrad and Bob Jungels. But Bob said he didn’t At his best, he prefers to save energy to help Lennard Kämna tomorrow, so I had to replace him up front. When I looked around in the breakaway, there were only monsters. The cooperation on the breakthrough was terrible, and then I found myself in the last Leading the climb. And then I know it’s over. I’ve got that in mind. So I can sprint the way I want.”

Maglia Rosa Geraint Thomas said: “Obviously Pavel Sivakov rode very well today, even though he crashed yesterday. He is definitely in good form. Hope tomorrow goes well in Switzerland and I can defend Maglia Rosa like I won the championship swiss tower forward. “
