[ad_1]

The number of executions worldwide will increase by 53% in 2022 from a year earlier, with notable increases in Iran and Saudi Arabia, Amnesty International said in an annual report on Tuesday, which also criticized Indonesia as Asia’s newest executioner. One of the most populated countries.

Amnesty International said 70% of executions in the Middle East and North Africa were carried out in Iran, an 83% increase from 314 executions in 2021 to 576 in 2022. The number of executions in Saudi Arabia tripled from 65 in 2021 to 196 in 2022.

Kuwait, Myanmar, the Palestinian Territories, Singapore and the United States also saw significant growth compared to 2021. A total of 883 executions were carried out in 20 countries, compared with 579 executions in 18 countries in 2021.

It said secrecy and restrictive state practices continued to affect accurate assessments of the use of the death penalty in several countries, including China, North Korea and Vietnam.

The group said 94 percent of the 112 new death sentences imposed in Indonesia in 2022 were based on drug-related crimes, which are classified as crimes that do not involve intentional homicide and therefore do not qualify as “most serious crimes” under international law threshold.

Amnesty International recorded at least 169 people sentenced to death in Bangladesh, the highest in the Asia-Pacific region, followed by India with 165 and Pakistan with 127.

Indonesia imposes the death penalty for crimes including murder, terrorism and drug trafficking, carried out by firing squad. Its most recent execution was in July 2016, when three Nigerians and an Indonesian convicted of drug offenses were shot dead on Nusa Kambangan prison island.

Indonesia currently holds more than 450 death row inmates, of which about 60% are convicted drug traffickers, including 88 foreigners from 18 countries.

In total, China, Iran, Saudi Arabia and Singapore carried out at least 325 executions for drug-related crimes, more than double the number recorded in 2021, according to the report.
