Gulf Giants add four homegrown Emirati players

Adani Sportsline-owned franchise Gulf Giants strengthened their roster with the addition of four homegrown players from the UAE.

Earlier, the Giants’ squad for the inaugural league included Australia’s Chris Lynn, West Indies’ Shimron Hetmeier and England’s James Vince and Chris Jordan among leading T20 players.

The likes of David Weiss, Tom Banton and Dominic Drakes are also among the other names who are part of the team.

The team has now added four new homegrown players from the UAE. Chundangapoyil Puthiyapurayil Rizwan is an Indian born cricketer who has been playing for the United Arab Emirates national cricket team since 2019. He was also named national team captain in August 2022.

Commenting on joining the team, Rizwan said: “It’s exciting to be able to play in any major franchise tournament and ILT20 has big plans to become a major franchise tournament while also boosting the participation of UAE cricketers. I’m looking forward to it Play and give my 100 percent.”

The second player to join the team is Aayan Afzal Khan. Ayan, an all-rounder from the UAE, made his ICC T20 World Cup debut at the age of 16 years and 335 days. He made history by becoming the youngest player to compete in the ICC T20 World Cup.

Another dynamic young talent is Sanchit Sharma. Sanchit is an Indian-born cricketer who plays for the UAE national cricket team. In October 2021, he was named to the UAE’s Twenty20 International Team for the 2021 Summer T20 Bash Championship.

He will make his T20I debut for the UAE against Ireland in October 2021.He was named in the UAE’s 2020 Under-19 squad ahead of his T20I debut cricket world cup.

Finally, the team added Ashwanth Valthappa. He played 217 games with 3,700 runs and a hit rate of 126.58 for a 27-point average. In bowling, he has 41 wickets and a best of 3/13.

Head Coach Andy Flower said: “One of the reasons a country hosts a franchise cricket championship is to grow the game in its own country and we are very proud to announce the addition of Four enterprising young UAE cricketers join the Gulf Giants squad in the ILT20. We look forward to them making a significant contribution to our success in January and the future of UAE cricket on the world stage.”
