As armed groups continued to wreak havoc in northwestern Nigeria, killings occurred in Sokoto State.
According to a state official and local parliament member, gunmen attacked a market and burned cars. In Sokoto State, Nigeria, at least 20 people were killed.
As the killings took place in Sokoto State on Saturday, armed groups continued to wreak havoc in the northwest of the country.
Since December last year, bandits in the area have stepped up to kidnap school children and villagers for ransom, disrupting the daily lives of millions of people.
Idris Gobil, a special adviser to the Minister of Police Affairs of Sokoto, said the assailants shot occasionally while riding a motorcycle, killing several people.
He told Reuters on the phone: “According to our witnesses and statistics, a large number of bandits have killed at least 20 people and set fire to 9 vehicles.”
Hussein Boza, a member of Sokoto’s local parliament, blamed the attack on the state’s lack of adequate security.
A Sokoto police spokesperson confirmed the attack, but could not immediately say how many people were killed.
Like other neighboring countries in the northwest of the country, parts of Sokoto are under telecommunications blockade as part of security operations to disrupt the activities of armed groups.
On Thursday, security personnel rescued 187 people kidnapped by armed groups in Zamfara State.
